Daniel Hicks was born in Navestock, Essex, c1805, and died c1894 in Barkingside, Essex. Married Ann Maria Porter in 1824, in Barkingside. Had at least one son, James Henry Hicks, b.1843. Daniel, and two possible brothers, moved from the Navestock area to the Ilford, Essex, area between 1820 and 1840, where they worked on farms. Other possible kin appear in Loughton and West Ham. James Henry Hicks, a bricklayer's labourer, married Mercy Brotherton in 1873, in Bethnal Green. A son, Henry, my grandfather, was born in 1878/9 in West Ham. Henry Hicks married Alice Harland in 1900, in West Ham. In the same year my father, Henry George Brotherton Hicks was born.
