Anyone know anything about a town in Carmarthenshire called Llangennech. Most of my husbands family seemed to have lived there since 1832 or thereabouts. Does anyone know what the nearest colliery was called, circa 1920's? One of my ancestors survived a pit disaster around about this time and I would like to find out more about it. Cheers.

Patricia
Llangennech is about 7 miles south of a colliery called Cynheidre, which I think would probably have been operational in the 1920s. Not far from Cynheidre was the Pentremawr colliery.

My great-grandfather, Gwilym Lewis, lived about a mile north of Llangennech at the time of the 1891 census, in a hamlet called Goytre. He was a coal miner, but I haven't yet discovered which pit(s) he worked at. However, given that at the time of the 1901 census, he was living in Llannon, there's a distinct possibility that he was working at Pentremawr or Cynheidre
