A tree on Ancestry has this info.

Esther Brown born 7/3/1846 died 22/2/1931 Durham and Thomas Carter 1841 Yorkshire died 1872,although no marriage shown had Mary Alice Brown Carter 1868 who married Robert Hall.
Esther Brown married in that name as a spinster in 10/5/1872 to William Hindmarch ORD.
This was after the death of Thomas Carter.
Robert Hall and Mary Alice Brown Carter had Nicholas Ord Hall and also Robert Hindmarch Hall in Houghton le Springs 1888.

I don't think that you have been spelling it wrong - I think it may have changed or it has been mistranscribed.

The marriage certainly is Patten on freebmd but this is the birth!!

I am wondering if Isabella's family originated from the Borders as Isabella is quite a Scottish name (in Scotland Isabella and Elizabeth were interchangeable) and Johnson/ Johnstone is quite a common surname in the Scottish borders. Also in Scotland it wasn't uncommon to give a son the mother or grandmother's maiden surname as a christian name.

EDIT

We are lucky that in Scotland when a widow or divorcee remarries, her marriage is indexed using both her maiden surname AND her previous married name - makes life easier!
