I am having a hell of a time tracing the tarrant family back. And wonder if anyone could help or shed light on this? I have managed to go back to walter tarrant 1851 who married an eliza jane unsure of her maiden name? He was born in Bermondsey and was a decorator he had the following children walter 1875 william 1876 George 1878 Harry 1880 ( nans dad and im stuck here) jack c1982 Think some died inbetween? minnie c1989 (move to aus)
Ok as i said im stuck on harry, he was known to his family as henry lewis tarrant but im unable to find him anywhere under henry so i have to take it that his harry as years and middle name matches in census. So looking for more info on the above. Now walter (1851) and eliza i can find on the censuc in 1881 as married and the first 4 children are on there, Then we have a blank! I can find him in the 71 census at 20 but although they tell me he was son of head of house i cannot find anymore info that tells me who else lived there. I have no record of him before or after anywhere, Now he had to have someone who cared for him and i dont know when he died but looking at the census i did find an eliza jane with a few of the children in 1991 but not sure if its the same one? I am now getting confused with it all and need help boo hoo Haha im really trying to get somewhere with this one as my nan is still living and she would really like to know more about her past. But appears the tarrants are not as easy to track as i first thought?

Have you found their marriage - Walter and wife? The certificate would give you both fathers' names and occupations and the brides surname. (One of the kids birth certs would give mums full name).
I think you are getting confused because you arent working backwards from solid facts and certificates but jumping backwards and forwards with no definite line to follow.
Not sure why you mean you are stuck on Harry, grans dad? You know who he married and when I take it? You still have gran there to ask. So in what way are you stuck?
You need to buy certificates at £7 each from GRO online to confirm you are on the right track. This is the 1871: 6 Cecilia Place, Blue Anchor Road. Walter is a house painter. His father was born Somers Town and is a sign writer. This is the right lot isnt it??

Just for your info, Eliza Jane Tulk is a biscuit packer. Her father is a furniture packer.
Moving forward to the 1881 when Harry is 8 months old:(By the way, the next door neighbours are some of my Dixon ancestors)

Oh, and as I said, get the 1851 birth cert(ref above) for Walter to get Sussanah's full maiden name.(possibly Caves?)
|
Thank youy for that your a star xxx Im going to have a read through and by looks of it everyone of them is right :) Problem i have is my nan saying (she is totally with it and brain members everything) said her dads called henry lewis hence me naming my son after him (lewis) but then she said she thought he was born a harry and i was totally thrown and thought i have been chasing wrong tree but seeing the names you have is great! as the addies you have posted match and they are what my nan remebers most. She can list everyones address incuding neighbours it seems haha but thank you again you really are great xxx off to read properly now
|
I have read through and i can see why i had problems now. Henry is def henry on his death cert i made nan look. Although on different census he was harry! and reading down that list they was all called tennant at one time so i think mistakes on census made it harder to follow. We shall set about getting some birth certs now i know for sure im on right track :) and it was eliza tule nan when i ask confirmed that it was that with spellins too, See she is very useful when you start telling her thinks she even told me it was peak freans biscuits eliza worked for haha
|
Yes it would be Peak Freans - did you see that they were neighbours to my ancestors, the Dixons?
|
Yes i see thats great! I told nan too as its her that wants me to find out more. Im still new to this whole tree thing and the spelling mistakes in census really throws me out. I still cannot see why we have no mention of the sister to henry (wrote up there as harry) minnie and jack isnt mentioned. But i keep finding people who i have known in our family as sue there name has been ann! They did like changing them huh?
|
You always need to look at the images - not just the transcribed info on ancestry. You may find lots more information that way.
If you cant find someone on a census, try using less info, like just a first name plus all the birth year, birth place, spouse or parents names other info - and then see if you can spot a likely transcription error in a name and then bring up the image to check it. In the 1891 above, I used just Harrys details - you are more likely to find the youngest person in a family or one with an unusual name (when you arent using a surname in the search).
|
PS Jack would be the John J shown in the 1891(Jack is the usual nickname for John, as Harry is usual nickname for Henry). Minnie may have been born the following year after the 1891. Yes, she was: (Do you not use freebmd?)
