Carol Report 21 Nov 2008 16:47

I have just received the birth certificate for my grandmother, on it it says that her mother was Jenny Taylor (nee Holland). She was married to Joseph Taylor, I have searched on this web site and on anscestory for their marriage but I cannot find it. It says on my grandmother's birth certificate that she was born in Spennymoor, county durham at 104 George Street. So I am assuming, perhaps wrongly, that her mother and father were married somewhere around that area. I also cannot trace either of them on any census.
I do know that my grandmother had other siblings (William, Robert, Ivy and Margaret) perhaps there may have been more. I don't know where else to turn.

Cheers

Helen

Oops, I'm an idiot -- that was a marriage record, not a birth record, lol.

Edit - David - you read too fast! I saw the error of my ways and deleted that bit, about searching for children, lol.

Hi

Well my grandma was born in 1900, so maybe thats the one. You are fantastic. I do hope this is correct. My grandmother was born on 2 July 1900 so would she have been on 1901 census?

David

David Report 21 Nov 2008 16:57

EB

They married in 1899 so most of the children may have been born before 1911.

Can you give us your grandmother's name, Carol??

It's hard to search for someone when you don't know who they are ...

I will check this one out, as I have never heard a Thomas mentioned, but I may be wrong. Did it say Jennie as opposed to Jenny in the census. I have just remembered that I have a jet brooch with Mary Ann Holland on it so that must have been Jenny's mother (my great great grandma).

Catherine

Catherine Report 21 Nov 2008 17:14

Maybe Thomas is from a previous marriage?

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 21 Nov 2008 17:16

Carol, are you wanting to go farther back than Jennie?

I'm not seeing her in earlier censuses. I was wondering whether Thomas was a child of hers before marriage, or a child of her husband's from a previous marriage, etc.

If you would just give the information you have!!!

Her mother was Mary Ann. Her father?? Any siblings?

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 21 Nov 2008 17:21

There is no birth of a Jenn* Holland registered in Durham 1865-1870.

David

David Report 21 Nov 2008 17:28

btw the place of birth looks like Spennymoor which is in Auckland District.

There is only one Jennie born in 1868 in Auckland and that is Jennie Robson.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 21 Nov 2008 17:42

Confusing, eh?

If she had married before, she would have married under her first married surname, but the surname on her children's birth certificate would have been her birth surname.

Supposedly, anyhow! Not everybody followed the rules, lol.

I'm just wondering about a Thomas Holland who is 2 weeks old in 1891, living with parents William and Mary Ann in Spennymoor.

Name: Thomas Holland
Age: 2 weeks
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1891
Relation: Son
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Mary A
Where born: Spennymoor, Durham, England
Civil Parish: Whitworth
Town: Spennymoor

William is from Wales and Mary Ann is from Durham.

This could make Thomas Jenny's brother, or son being reared by her parents.

If we knew Jenny's father's name ...
