Janice.
Charles was married 1872 "full age".
The 1854 birth makes him only 18.

Of course he could have lied or his "father" gave his permission. In which case he would have given his correct age .

I would like someone to find Charles after he is married in 1891,1901 with the children mentioned because Im having trouble locating them

Ivy,

But there could have been due to bad writting if something wasnt quite understood by a clerk and he put down what they thought was right,,,,,?

and writting was by the quill then,,,,,,

as I have birth cert and marriage cert 1918&1920 and a mistake has been made in the chirstian name from Register Office to entry into the GRO register,,,,,,

Both Matilda and Charles were "full age" - Matilda was born 1852, so she would have been 21 in March 1872. It is possible that Charles was 21 before the 27.10.1872.

I have Matilda and Charles on the 1881, 1891 & 1901 census' - their children's names being: Mary Ellen, Thomas Henry, Sarah, Matilda, Albert, Charles & Gladys.

Can't remember their names as I have kept the certificate in a file, but I remember that their names did not match any in my family tree at the moment, and 1 of the witnesses made their mark, whilst 1 was able to write their name.

If Charles was "full age" in 1872 he would have to be over 21. The later census found suggests he wasnt.

Are you sure that is him.?
Do you have him on later census?
Do you have any childrens names?

Marriage certificates are copies. The parties would complete the marriage register entry and a copy would go to the local registry office. Details would be sent on to the general register office. Certificates purchased from the GRO would be in the handwriting of a clerk employed there.

The marriage register entry is the closest to the actual event.

Who were the witnesses on the marriage cert?

Thank you for your time and research - it is appreciated. I shall have to see if I can find details of Edward's death, to see if the Edward theory works.

If the occupation is left blank, then the Edward theory is really only possible if he died 1871/72...

1871:

Name: Charles P Johnson
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1854
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Edward H
Mother's Name: Alice
Gender: Male
Where born: Crumpotal, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: Eccleston
Ecclesiastical parish: Christchurch
Town: St Helen
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Registration district: Prescot
Sub-registration district: Prescot
ED, institution, or vessel: 15

Household schedule number: 49
Household Members:
Name Age
Alice Johnson 54
Charles P Johnson 17
Edward H Johnson 54
Louisa M Johnson 14
William H Johnson 17

I checked out Crumpsall - it is a suburb of Manchester, just north of the centre, quite a long way from the St Helens claimed as the birthplace on the 1881 census. If he was brought up in St Helens, it might still be your relative?

Rachel

Rachel Report 1 Mar 2008 22:50

Charles and Matilda married in Christ Church, Eccleston.

Rachel

Rachel Report 1 Mar 2008 22:50

Both Charles and Matilda made their marks - no signatures there. The "father's" occupation was left blank - which is what I would expect to see for a mother/widow.

Did they marry in a church as Parish Registers could give different information,?
