Thank you for your reply. I had not remembered to look at the birth reference for William which you found last year - just focused on the birth reference in this thread - oops!

I will request William's birth certificate - using the reference you have found, and Louisa's birth certificate.

It would appear that blindness ran in the family, as William's first 2 children were blind from birth, so William, his brother, his mother and his first 2 children were blind from birth.

What to do now?

I ordered the birth certificate for William Peart

PEART John William Louth 7a 549

and the names of the parents were not what I was expecting, so this was not the right reference.

I also ordered the certificate for Florence - however, it has her father's name as being William (it should be James) and the mother's maiden name was the same as her married name - Moody.

So, I am stuck. I need to find the right birth reference for William Peart and Florence, as well as the death cerificate for James.

Thank you for clearing that point up - I was beginning to get a bit confused. There is a birth reference for Florence and I have ordered that certificate. I'm hoping that it will show me Emma's previous surname. I will keep you posted...

You've got it the wrong way round for Emma.
She was born Emma Sutton, had George who I assume was illegitimate as he seems to be a Sutton, then she has Florence, Louisa and Eveline by James Moody although I cannot find a marriage nor birth registrations for any of the children - there is a baptism on the IGI for Eveline giving her father as James.
Whether James died or they just split up I wouldn't know as there is no way of telling which James Moody is the father.

Wow! Thank you very much! It appears that Emma then went on and married to a Mr Sutton. Why would Emma's children have her maiden name though?

I think that Emma filled this one in putting George as Head and herself as mother and then got confused and gave the relationship of the others to herself. The indexers have given Eva and louisa the surname of the family next door. I assume the enumerator misheard or misread Morley for Moody - it's not that much different.

Have looked through the Emma's which are listed above as marrying James Moody and am not sure which one it is.

Maybe I should request a birth certificate - would this show if Emma had married before?

The Hughwallis site is really good - have bookmarked it for future reference.

Have gone through the list of Emma's - there are 2 which are born in Market Drayton, Shropshire - Emma Smith (b1833) and Emma Farnill (although its been spelt Farnell, so 1 of these could be the Emma we're looking for....

You should have a look on IGI and the hughwallis site and see if you can pin down a birth for Emma to get her maiden name - according to the census she was born about 1835.

You then need to try to find a marriage for her to her first husband - to get her surname for her marriage to James Moody.

You have found the thread which is to do with Florence's marriage to William Peart. I now have that marriage certificate and am trying to work backwards to find out more information about Florence's parents etc...

There were quite a few threads on this family last April.
Don't want to bump them up as old threads cause confusion but if you use the names eg William Peart, Florence Moody in the Advanced Search it will bring them up

True - trying to find James' death between 1870 - 1881 may be hard - especially as we don't know where he was born; and we haven't found him on any census. However, I am sure that with all the information that has been found, that someone will be able to find it.
