Does your MIL have a middle name? And no, I don't think you are wrong to want to know, but it is a difficult situation.

immy Report 9 Apr 2008 19:57

I wish my MIL would understand that we only want to know about her family because we're interested in their lives and how they may have influenced ours, not because we're snooping or trying to find any skeletons in cupboards.
Am I wrong to pursue this, what do you think?

Hi Imelda,
Whats ur hubby's name? i'll see if i can get his mothers maiden name for you

Kay????

Kay???? Report 9 Apr 2008 19:06

There is a ,

Laurie T Smith.June 1931,

Registered in Burton......

GRO index, Vol.6b-page 501,

mothers maiden name FOGG.

against the birth reg there is an X which means there was an amendnet or mistake at the actual registrar office register &r its been noted at GRO......

so the F could have been mistrandscribed as T..........these recored were all hand written when entered up .so mistakes were made,,,,,,,,,

Have pm'd you to offer to look for hubbies birth details

immy Report 9 Apr 2008 19:01

I don't think that if I find out anything, I would tell MIL. She obviously has good reasons for the secrecy and I wouldn't want to cause her pain or embarrassement. It's just that my husband feels sad that he never knew any of his grandparents and he'd like to know if maybe his, or our sons, personal traits or interests are due to them. Does that make sense?

You need someone to search on Ancestry or Findmypast to find the details for you

immy

immy Report 9 Apr 2008 18:50

Can I look at the GRO indexes online, or will I have to visit?

immy

immy Report 9 Apr 2008 18:47

Thanks LFW I'll try hubby's birth on GRO first.
We've puzzled for years about the name and the secrecy.
Wouldn't she have needed her birth certificate to claim her state pension or for other official business in the past?

Dea Report 9 Apr 2008 17:50

WWehhay to go Imelda !!!

Get that cert and come back to us.

MIL will not know what's hit her !!

Dea x

P.S. - Please remember to be kind though - there may be a good reason that she doesn't want you to find the truth??

immy

immy Report 9 Apr 2008 17:49

Now you,re thinking that sounds like a good idea.

immy

immy Report 9 Apr 2008 17:44

I wonder if I bought my husband's full birth certificate from 1951, maybe she may have put her maiden name on it? He's only got the short version, which doesn't give the mother's maiden name.

immy

immy Report 9 Apr 2008 17:41

Hi Lindsey,
no, not that she's telling us anyway.
