Thank you Valerie, This is great help. Have found a tree on this site that have me a lot of info. They only have records to James Coates and nothing of him coming to OZ so I am almost certain we are talking about the same person. Could not find a George Coates coming to Oz but will keep looking. In 1883 we all emigrants put through VIC even if they went to Sydney or would they have left the boat in Vic.

Yes - VIC was the main 'entrance' (apart from Fremantle in the West) I know WA State Library has lists of ALL passengers to Aus -including their destinations - as they passed through Fremantle -(up until 1923). It's on-line I believe. (think Aust National Library (Canberra) would have the records too.) ...Valerie
