Yes - VIC was the main 'entrance' (apart from Fremantle in the West) I know WA State Library has lists of ALL passengers to Aus -including their destinations - as they passed through Fremantle -(up until 1923). It's on-line I believe. (think Aust National Library (Canberra) would have the records too.) ...Valerie |

Thank you Valerie, This is great help. Have found a tree on this site that have me a lot of info. They only have records to James Coates and nothing of him coming to OZ so I am almost certain we are talking about the same person. Could not find a George Coates coming to Oz but will keep looking. In 1883 we all emigrants put through VIC even if they went to Sydney or would they have left the boat in Vic. |

Hi Sharon - do you think the 'James Coates' who d 1939 (Newcastle) was 'James's father? If so -remember 'Joy Murrin's Transcription service' -the d cert would show how long he'd been in Aus and his off-spring. ...Valerie |

Wonder if parents Ann & James came from UK with brothers James and Henry? No marriage for James and Ann and no children with parent james and ann. Maybe George was a cousin to James and Henry? Will keep probing Sharon |

Thank you all again it wonderful to have such great help. The James Coates that died in 1939 is not ours as James as he died in the 60's so I think Cherilyn might be on something with parents james and Anne for the James who died in 1962 will have to follow this up and get back. I had a look last night but must of missed it or decided it could not be ours. Thanks again |

Hi Sharon - there's a possible death for 'James Coates' 1939 Newcastle (Reg. no.4869/1939) -it gives parents' names as 'John & Mary'..... JOY MURRIN's Transription service will check the d cert. (fee from $7). ..Valerie (WA) |

If you got his 1891 marriage certificate, would that tell you his father's name? English certificates show that. |
