Lorraine Report 6 Sep 2008 01:29

I have been trying to find out details of my grandfathers family history but keep hitting a brick wall as I can not find any brith records.

His name is James Henry Gascoine born 01/08/1917 in London (Islington?) he has a twin sister Lillian
He married Maud Waddilove on 25/12/1938

Also, Ive also been told by there was a Train converted into a hotel that was owned by uncles. Any information on this would be great

I'm the last in this line and would love to find out anything that can start me off finding out my roots.

Thank you

There appear to be a set of twins in 1907 - Leonard and Dorothy ???

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 6 Sep 2008 01:58

Hi Jayne,

I spotted them aswell, do you think the twins could have been born before the marriage and their names changed at a later date??

Just seems strange we can't find either of them!!

As it was war time I'm thinking perhaps his mother wasn't married or something else along these lines.....

Hi Rose,

Just checked the quarters either side of the birth for a Lilian/Lillian, no surname, looking for twins in the Islington area. No joy.

I'm stumped!!!

There is no James HENRY Gascoine, Gascoyne etc etc in the year quoted - if all the info is taken from his death certificate, it can be inaccuarte, dont forget..depending on who reported the death.

On the off-chance it is the James above...this would be the Gascoine / Scott marriage

Name: James A Gascoine

Rose, even if he was illigitimate, and his mother's name was Gascoine/Gasgoine etc he will take her name as per his twin.

Lorraine - HOW SURE ARE YOU HE WAS A TWIN ??

Jayne

Jayne Report 6 Sep 2008 02:14

WHAT CERTIFICATES DO YOU HAVE ?

ie. marriage cert to give father's name ??? and confirm year of his birth ???

Lorraine has them born in Brixton on her tree so I don't think she knows exactly where they were born.

I'm thinking that his mother wasn't married to Mr Gascoi(g)ne at the time so they were born under another name.

Looks like Lorraine went to bed.

Final comment...

I checked every James H ..... (10 of them )
and every Lillian + Lilian ........(90 of them)

in 1917 in Islington... NONE share any surname, let alone Gascoine, so NO twins appear to have been born in 1917 with those first names.

Hi everyone
Thanks for replies

They are deffinatley twins as my Great Aunt (Lillian Gascoine) is still alive and have gained as much information from her as possible.

There is speculation that the mum hid a few secrets, and possibly not married but ive not been able to find out much more.
Due to not being able to find out date of birth i have no certificates. Only the marriage between him and my Grandmother who is still alive also.

My Aunt Lillian has also mentioned that there were 2 "Uncles" that were rich and payed for my grandfather to go to the Oval school for boys, but she doesnt know their names.

Hi Lorraine,

Do you have James' marriage certificate?? If so what was his fathers name, failing that can your great aunt not tell you her parents christian names. These would be of great value at the moment to try and further the search for you.

Does Lilian/Lillian have a middle name?? And is it 1 L or 2 L's.

No sign of a marriage for an Ernest and Emma.

Do you know when either died?

What about other siblings for Lillian and James?
