Selena in South East London Report 7 Sep 2008 21:44

Have you looked on FreeBMD for all the James born in those quarters, Sept and Dec 1917 in the right area? I will go and have another look for you.

Hello Selena

The age of my grandad when married was 21
DOB 01/08/1917 The same for my aunt as they are twins. He died in Lewisham on 05/09/1984 his death cert says he was born in brixton but this doesnt seem to be true and the dates dont match up.
The family came from south london, brixton. I had been told islington but I dont think this information is correct.

Does it give an age for James on his marriage certificate?

I'm a bit confused over the areas to be looking at Lewisham or Islington?

I cannot find a birth for Ernest 1920 or Renee.

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 7 Sep 2008 20:39

I have some success and have found out that the father and mother of James Henry Gascoine are

Ernest Gasoine (c1876)
Emma Gatton (not sure on spelling) possibly Irish??

Siblings
Ernest Gascoine (c1920)
Renee Gascoine

Sibliings of Ernest
Uncle Charles - Shorham
Uncle Major (nickname)
Aunt Eileen

If anyone can find out where or when my Grandfather-James Henry Gascoine and Aunt Lillian Gascoine were born it would be of great help. I cannot find any records of any twins born during the dates

Do you know which town Lillian is in now? Perhaps I can find her on the electoral register to see if there's a middle initial.

Hi Rose
Not really other than what is listed on my tree.

No-one in my family seems to know that much, I can start to understand why!

Hi Lorraine,

Do you have any other info. for dates of marriages or deaths for any of his siblings?

Rose

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 7 Sep 2008 01:01

I believe his brother lived in the same area but I dont know if or who he married so this could possible be his brother Earnest.

I am really baffled now?! it would seem that not only my grandfather but his siblings have been born under a different name, but I dont have anything to go on??? Confused!!

Hi Lorraine,

I presume your G Aunt Lillian has confirmed her DOB.
Couldn't find a marriage, same as Rose really, but found this;

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Dec 1924 (98%)
-----
GASCOIGNE Ernest T Webb Lewisham 1d 1932
Webb Matilda L Gascoigne Lewisham 1d 1932

I noted your Grandfather died in the same area, did the family live there??

Do you know when either died?

Hi Lorraine,

Do you have James' marriage certificate?? If so what was his fathers name, failing that can your great aunt not tell you her parents christian names. These would be of great value at the moment to try and further the search for you.

Does Lilian/Lillian have a middle name?? And is it 1 L or 2 L's.

Hi everyone
Thanks for replies

They are deffinatley twins as my Great Aunt (Lillian Gascoine) is still alive and have gained as much information from her as possible.

There is speculation that the mum hid a few secrets, and possibly not married but ive not been able to find out much more.
Due to not being able to find out date of birth i have no certificates. Only the marriage between him and my Grandmother who is still alive also.

My Aunt Lillian has also mentioned that there were 2 "Uncles" that were rich and payed for my grandfather to go to the Oval school for boys, but she doesnt know their names.

Final comment...

I checked every James H ..... (10 of them )
and every Lillian + Lilian ........(90 of them)

in 1917 in Islington... NONE share any surname, let alone Gascoine, so NO twins appear to have been born in 1917 with those first names.

Lorraine has them born in Brixton on her tree so I don't think she knows exactly where they were born.

I'm thinking that his mother wasn't married to Mr Gascoi(g)ne at the time so they were born under another name.

Looks like Lorraine went to bed.

WHAT CERTIFICATES DO YOU HAVE ?

ie. marriage cert to give father's name ??? and confirm year of his birth ???

Jayne

Jayne Report 6 Sep 2008 02:12

Rose, even if he was illigitimate, and his mother's name was Gascoine/Gasgoine etc he will take her name as per his twin.

Lorraine - HOW SURE ARE YOU HE WAS A TWIN ??

Jayne

Jayne Report 6 Sep 2008 02:09

There is no James HENRY Gascoine, Gascoyne etc etc in the year quoted - if all the info is taken from his death certificate, it can be inaccuarte, dont forget..depending on who reported the death.

On the off-chance it is the James above...this would be the Gascoine / Scott marriage
