Please could I ask for a look up on both census for a Hugh Wight Arbuckle. He was born in Scotland but was a doctor in Thorne in Yorkshire.
By 1891 he was a widower with a family.

I'd looked on the 1881 and found Hugh, his wife and three children - Hugh, Agnes and Robert so I was wondering if there were more children.
Any idea of the relationship of the people listed to Hugh (thanks D for mentioning sister Agnes). Guessing some might be servants to a doctor.

Thanks again Denise, Ericthered and also Margaret for your time tonight in helping me. Your information is just great.
I have to tell you all that a few weeks ago in Church a few of us were looking at a plaque in memory of Hugh Arbuckle. We were interested that he'd come to Thorne from Scotland and married a lady from Nottingham in the mid 1800's. The house where they lived with their family is still there and I pass if often, a lovely old house.
I have found his grave no. in Thorne Churchyard with his wife. A Quentin and David Arbuckle are also buried with them but I didn't know who they were.
So tomorrow morning in Church, guess what the topic of conversation will be!

Medical News. Dec. 7, 1918

DR. HUGH WIGHT' ARBUCKLE of Thorne, Doncaster, died there on November 17tIh, aged 71. Three days earlier he had made a round of professional visits, and at night retired to rest without showing signs of the deadly coma
in which he was found on the following morning. He was born at Kilmarnock in 1847. He studied at Glasgow and was awarded tlhe. G. Watson gold medal at Glasgow in 1867; he graduated M.B.Aberd. in 1869 and M.D. in 1871.
Nearly fifty years ago he acquired a practice at Thorne and somewhat later was appointed medical officer to the Thorne workhouse and to several of the neighbouring parishes. In 1877 Dr. Arbuckle was appointed the medical officer of health for the Thorne Rural District, a position he held with much credit till hlis death. By dint of persevering evening study he had qualified for this position by obtaining the D.P.H.Camb. in 1890. He was a certifying
surgeon under the Factory Acts. Dr. Arbuckle was
pre-eminently the friend of the weak and poor, over whom he wielded a benign influence, and by them especially he will be much missed.

Denise, all that information - thank you so much. Just one final question please. On the 1891 census does it give a house number for Ellison Street in Thorne. On the 1881 they lived at Stonegate, so I'm wondering where they moved to and Ellison St is only a stone's throw away from me!

Beryl, there's no house number on Ellison St. on either the 1891 or 1901 census but in 1901 they have the name of the house "Drunslog" or "Drumslog"?
