Oh Margaret - What a special man Dr Arbuckle must have been. Thank you so very much for that wonderful information. The Thorne Workhouse is still there although it's been converted to flats now. With the plaque being in Church, we can only imagine that he was a frequent member of the congregation. I wonder what he looked like.

Margaret - the house on Ellison Street was called 'Drumclog'!
I remember it well as a child because it was such an unusual name and it was near the park. Sadly, it was pulled down in the 1970's although Elm Lodge where he lived in 1881 still stands today.
Elm Lodge is a big house on its own whereas if I remember rightly Drumclog was detached, but in a row and not quite as grand as Elm Lodge.
I'm buzzing with excitement tonight, thank you so much.
I wonder if any of his family stayed locally - oh well, another time!

A descendant, perhaps?
Lt. James Hugh Arbuckle (RNVR) of Thorne married Miss Kathleen Hall of Scunthorpe, 17 Oct. 1942.

A David Arbuckle (possibly son of Dr. Hugh?) married Kate Servant in W. Derby 1918 then a James H. Arbuckle (the Lt. above?) was born 1920, Thorne with mother's maiden name Servant. Also a David D. Arbuckle born 1922, Thorne with MMN Servant.

Dear Margaret - sorry I missed your final reply last night, but here I am now to say thank you very much.
As you can imagine there was much chit chat in church this morning with all the info I'd been given last night. In fact, I'm not normally up as late as I was last night and nearly overlaid this morning!
Your latest message looks really promising with possible ancestors. I think I need now to put some of these into the GR name search and see if anybody else is researching that family.
I'm actually researching my own parent's families but I seem to have got side tracked! I don't mind at all though, this is gripping!

You sound like a soulmate, Beryl! I, too, get sidetracked and go off on tangents. I spent more time researching a step-grandmother even though I wasn't related to her at all but her life was so fascinating.
Mind you, I didn't stay up as late as you did, I'm in Canada so 5 hours behind you.

Hello Margaret - I'm glad you picked up on my up-date. Thank you again. I was just putting a few Arbuckle names in the GR search but to no avail as yet. I'll keep trying.
The Church are hoping to publish an up to date brochure for the congregation and visitors and it was suggested that the information on the Arbuckles was included in it, which is great. The only thing is it's a very old church and there are umpteen plaques in memory of various people, I'm concerned they may want me to research a few more!
Oh well, it is autumn here now and the gardening has slowed down somewhat, maybe I could just fit the odd couple in!
I've only been into genealogy about three years or so.It really is amazing that you have been able to help me from so far away - thanks.
