Find Ancestors

I am really confused about who William Smailes born 1831 married. I was told through a hot match that he married two women and had 9 children however as i am going through the family this does not seem to match. His mother was Jane Aynsley born 1821 and his father was Thomas Smailes born 1811. So could anyone help me find out if this is true. Thank you to anyone who helps.

Are you sure about his mother's birth year?

by what you're telling us his mother had a different surname from him and was only ten when she had him

He was born in Tanfield, Northumberland and his mother was born in Northumberland and it may be a couple of years out

I never realised that she would of only been ten. Maybe all the information i received through the hot match was wrong.

Maybe Jane is Thomas's sister, that is all i can think of. If anyone could find out i would be extremely grateful.

A quick look at the census shows at least 3 William Smailes c1831 Tanfield, so that's where the confusion may arise.

Tanfield seems to be part of Chester le Street, Durham

BTW..Tanfield is Durham.....not Northumberland!

I am trying to research it now because i was trying to piece things together and it wasnt working with the information i was given so i am trying to start all over again

I have posted above Thomas and Jane marriage and also the birth of Thomas Jnr. These are from familysearch and are submitted records so would need to be verified.

Perhaps we can help you work backwards.....rather than forwards?

Lania, I think you're going about this the wrong way. It's much better to work backwards through the censuses, starting with the person who you know definitely is yours.
Are you definitely descended from this William Swailes? How? Through which child?

My nans nan is Eleanor Smailes born 1891 i believe her parents were James and Jane. Then James parents i believe are Thomas and Jane. I found out who James siblings were and now i am trying to find out who they married
