My entire 'Murphy' family had nicknames...

Frarnie, Tommy, Teddy, Maggie, Johnny, Spud and Dessie

Dessie died as Daniel born as Dan
Spud was born as Edmund, married as Edward and Died as Eddy!

Aunt Catherine was Anne
Uncle Bob is Graham
and Nanna Sarah is Mary!

I just wish they'd stick to one name!

Had exactley the same from my dad.I asked him for everything he knew. Not much love was the answer and I got the names of my paternal Gt Grandparents... After weeks looking and waiting for certs I proudly told him who I'd found only to get the answer Yes that's right!!!!!!
I was crushed, now I ask my auntie a more reliable source.

For many years growing up as a child, my father and his mother (my grandmother) would always refer to my grandfather (who was deceased) as Henry. So when I began my research here in the States for my grandfather's birth, I was looking for Henry--why couldn't I find it? After talking with my father in the early stages of my research, he said no his father's name was Robert.

It appears that my paternal grandfather had a habit of giving everyone a nickname; he would call some one Margaret or Tom and they gave him one that stuck!

Yes talk with relations but also confirm with actual documents as confirmation. I live here in the States so it's hard for me to look up actual documents or records over the pond so I would have to depend upon ordering all the records to find that one confirmation.

As I research I make a notation of "possible" records to my family's comments until I actually order the record for confirmation. As Halfcanuck does, this enables me to go back to the records as I'm researching that particular lineage and family and order the certificates.

If someone doesn't want to order the certificate for whatever reason, that's when I stop helping.

I asked my father in law his grandfathers name he replied Gilbert.I thank god to this day I had already ordered father in laws father's birth cert because his name was Ernest William!!!!!! If i'd gone with gilbert I would have made a horrible mess of my tree.
Listen to what rellies say but NEVER EVER take it for gospel.

one small hint

always ask a rellie before actually buying the cert

i found what i thought was an 'unknown' sibling of my grans

i told my mum after the cert arrived and confirmed my suspicions

'oh yes' she says, 'there was an uncle sid, he never married and lived in the almshouses' !!!

I agree.. I started my family tree by getting my 4 grandparents birth certificates, that got me going. If i get stuck i get another certificate.

People expect to be able to search their family history back to the Ice age for free at the computer. Not going to happen!!

My worst nightmare has been saving up to get a certificate then finding it's the wrong one! Grrr

I have gone down the wrong Road for not getting a marriage cert to confirm parents. Never again! £7 is worth every penny to stop you wasting hours on the wrong family
