Mel Fairy Godmother Report 1 Dec 2008 10:19

When first putting things on the TTF boards I never realised that you had to keep clicking on your page to see if you had any answers. Perhaps this is what is happening to newbies! If they have the page up on their pc and think that any replies are going to come up automaticly they are mistaken. You either have to click on the page at the bottom of the page or go back to your thread through the yellow box as Ann explained earlier on this thread.

I cant see any yellow box on my page!!!! how simple would that be if I could...I trawl through loads of questions before I get to the one I wrote ...I get way layed cos other requests are interesting.....like many others I would like to say thanks you all for the help you have given in the past to me.

AnnCardiff Report 1 Dec 2008 10:40

there is a yellow box on the left - a man in it with a black top hat on - it says "My Threads", Advanced Search, my bookmarks, and bookmark this. Use "bookmark this" if you see something that you would like to refer back to, but it is something you are not adding to.

Whilst I agree wholeheartedly with you all in what you have said on this subject, can I please mention another side to this coin, or bugbear, without getting my head bitten off, as I am sticking my neck out here.
If I put up an "ask", I regularly return to the post to see if I have any replies, even if I have had to go out for a couple of hours, and always say please and thank you, as is only polite.

But, I have twice answered threads where people have offered to look in local archives offices on their next visit to town, only to never hear from them again. I have had someone in Germany offer to look at things there for me, but again, never had as much as an acknowledgement of receipt of the information I have given.
But the one that surprised me most of all was a person/s, well known on these boards, who, after I sent a PM asking if they were still doing look-ups, and me not taking it for granted that they did,and then giving them all the information I had, have completely ignored my request, despite their advertising that they are bored and want to do look-ups for people.
I am not pointing the finger at anybody, but I can assure everyone who is reading this, that I am extremely grateful for any help I get. It can be equally frustrating, if you are relying on someones very kind offer, only to have it ignored.

fair enough Julia - people should not offer to do research if they are not going to live up to their promise - I really am not much good at it myself, drop lucky on the Mormon LDS site now and again, but just love doing it!!!

Hi Julia in Derbyshire

Can just reply to a question in your post re PM

I know that there were/are a few that offer to do look up do say no PM's...That might be why you never got a reply

Julia Report 1 Dec 2008 17:22

Please, please, - I like many others have been experiencing trouble on here today, so don't think I have posted and ran.
Julie with love hearts,or are they urns - please forgive - you may have misinterprated what I said. I PM'd the persons to ask if they were still doing research as I had not seen them on the boards for a while. They PM'd me back saying yes they still did,and what did I need help with. It wasn't,on my behalf, a "cold call" as you might call it
Many thanks to all

Hi

Julie in Derbyshire ...... I understand what you mean.

I posted a thread almost 18 months ago asking if anyone could tell me how to find some information in a newspaper 'cos the local paper couldn't read their own microfiches (!!) ............. yep, we helpers still get stuck ourselves!!

Someone responded that the best place was a Central Newspaper Archives in Preston (???), that they went there every few months, and they would do the look up for me. I sent all the information .... and have still not heard anything!

I think what happens with some of the people who offer this kind of help, or who offer the lookups like you asked for, is that they get swamped, and lose the "little piece of paper"

Ann

Rootsuk huh??? lol!!!

I agree with Jacqueline on this one, I have posted a few times here looking for help but have found it difficult to relocate the post again, maybe I'm just stupid.
