I'm using genes reunited not ancestry so do your instructions still stand for this site too?

Tracey Report 13 Mar 2009 22:08

other inherited info:-
1901 George Henry (my grandad) and Joseph Kettlewell were living with there sister Matilda Jackson/Kettlewell and her family George Bessindale, head age 54 and daughter Martha A, age 4. Address 53 Wilson Gardens, Rotherham, Yorkshire.
Got Matilda and Georges marriage details, mar qtr 1890 Thorne. She is using the Kettlewell name at time of marriage not sure when she stopped being Jackson.

I also thought that the death of Richard Kettlewell at Glanford Brigg in 1890 must be my Richard, so its nice to hear that you think the same. At least I know I can get some things right. Also been in touch with a relative of Marthas last husband who she married in Dec 1892 Doncaster. He was called John Smith Brooks from Barnsley. No idea when she died though.

And just for future ref -- this is info that you had but did not offer up at the beginning, and that would have saved us all some time indeed. You *did* know about the previous marriage!

We're very clever, but there isn't a lot of point in "discovering" things that people already know.

Now, if you are an Ancestry subscriber, you need to start adding notes to the names in the censuses.

Starting with Sarah in 1871, you can add two corrections.

First, to give her full birth name. Refer to the IGI in your notes, and say what your relationship is (i.e. to her husband).

Second, to correct the spelling of Kettlewell. Refer to the 41, 51 and 61 censuses, and give the date of her death under that name.

That means that anyone looking for her in future will be able to find her where we didn't (although I'd swear I tried searching for Sarah Naomi as given names, just in case!). I've had distant cousins with fascinating stories contact me that way.

To make corrections, look on the left of the screen when you are viewing her individual record. You'll see the link "Comments and Corrections". Click on it, and then on "Add an Alternate Name".

Be sure to call Greenwood a "birth surname", or it will get applied to her children too. And be careful when you enter the names. Too many people do things like put their own name instead of the person's name. ;)

Yeesh, no wonder.

You're using Ancestry?

On the search page for the 1871 census, down at the bottom, you see

RG10/

followed by three boxes.

For Piece, enter 4536

For Folio, enter 40

For Page #, enter 41

Or you can just search for the name

Sarah Naomi R Blotthwell

!!

Hannah Leather 55
Sarah Naomi R Blotthwell 56
Mary Blotthwell 19
Hannah Blotthwell 16
Amelia A Caling 14

I am a novice at this but have gathered quite a few bits and pieces and have inherited some bits of research from a family member. Some of this inherited info i can't seem to verify online. Probably just looking in the wrong place.
You mention about Sarah Naomi Ruth being hard to find in 1871 while Richard was staying at the pub. Well I have a reference number RG10 4536 40 41. I don't know where this number refers to so that I can view it but supposedly it shows sarah staying with her sister in law Hannah Leather or Leasher.
Hannah Leather, head, married, age 55.
Sarah Naomi R Kettlewell, visitor, sister in law, married, age 56.
Mary Kettlewell, visitor, neice, age 16.
Hannah Kettlewell, visitor, neice, age 16.
Amelia Ashaley, visitors servant, age 14.

Can you tell me what the number refers to so that I may be able to view the details as i don't seem to be having much luck at inputing the names, it just comes up with no match.

Tracey

you're very welcome

I enjoyed myself last night unravelling the story.

The next step is to try to work out what happened to all the children ....... and to see if we can find Sarah on the 1871 ....... she has to be somewhere!

WOW,
I really wasn't expecting such a brilliant response from you all so quickly.
Will take me a while to sort out the bits I know from the info you have so kindly submitted.
I was starting to think they must never have married and she just took his name and you have further confirmed this for me.
Can't wait to put all your info together when i have a little more time.
Thanks Again

I love those bankruptcies! I just wish I knew how to find them. I had to be told of one that explained everything in one of my own families by a wonderful GR member who found it in the Times or some such.

Just like my guy, old Richard doesn't seem to have suffered too much from the bankruptcy. Still the idle rich in 71 and 81. At least he didn't do what mine did -- after blowing his considerable inheritance on the horsies in about 4 years, he changed his name ... and his kids' names ... and pretended he was born in Scotland ...

Good one, Quoy!

I was thinking we might find her parents in 1841/51 ... but John and Mary Greenwood? Gimme a break ...

I checked the two John & Mary couples in Bradford in 41, and they weren't idle.
