Helen
All the census records confirm Cecilia's birthplace as Oswestry. This seems quite far from Wincanton

I still can't shake this feeling that this birth is somehow connected. Tryphena Dyke doesn't seem to be a name she'd have plucked out of thin air!

Tryphena Dyke
Year of Registration: 1857 : Apr-May-Jun
District: Wincanton
County: Dorset, Somerset

Going out for a bit- I'll have a think and check back in later.

Gritty Report 13 Jun 2009 10:36

Hello Martin,

No thoughts yet, but I think the next step would be to order the Pomeroy/ Roberts marriage certificate.

The birth for Celia Anne Roberts does seem to be the most likely possibly- although on the hand written indexes it looks like Celia Anna.

Re the marriage of Cecilia's parents in Dec 1852:

MACEY Elizabeth Taunton 5c 718
Roberts Edwin Taunton 5c 718

Following Elizabeth back to 1851, she is Elizabeth Macey

Keep us posted- gripping stuff!!

Martin Report 13 Jun 2009 09:57

Cecilia- my assessment so far
Fact 1 Cecilia was born in Oswestry confirmed in the following: 1861 Census Celilia Anna Roberts (4) living in Bedfordshire 1871 Census Cecilia A Roberts (13) living in Taunton 1881 Census Cecila Pomeroy (23) living in Haverfordwest
St Thomas,Pembroke 1891 Census Cecelia Annie Pomeroy (33) living in Gloucester 1901 Census Cecilia A Pomeroy (43) living in Coulsdon, Croydon Fact 2 Dec 1877 Cecelia Anne Roberts (19) married Arthur Shubrook Pomeroy in Taunton Vol 5c p 630 Fact 3 1911 Census C F Pomerey (54) living at Wallingford Berkshire (as Widow) Fact 4 June 1941 Cecilia Pomeroy (84) died at Wallingford, Berkshire 2c 740 Fact 5 Birth year was 1857 or 1858 according to above ages.
Birth found: Celia Anne Roberts b 1857 Apr-Jun Oswestry, Denbighshire, Shropshire Vol 6a Page 625. Is this her?
I must accept that her Maiden Name name was Cecilia Anne Roberts according to her Marriage record.
There are three unanswered questions: 1) There is no mention of her middle name Tryphena. 2) I still don't know where the name Dyke came from? Both of these names appear on her son Ralph Alan Pomeroy's Birth Cert. 3) The name Anne doesn't appear on the Birth Cert.
So, do any of you experts out there have any more ideas.
Thanks for your great efforts
Martin

Thanks Helen
I don't know whether my Ethel had the middle name of May, so I'm still confused about Ethel unless I get a Birth Cert.
Ralph Alan Pomeroy was 14 when his father died, so he had to start work (not uncommon for boys to work at 14 in those days). He got a job at his father's company Great Western Railways in Reading. He became an Accountant and in 1896 at the age of 18, he was sent by the GWR to join the newly established Cape Government Railways in what was then the Cape Colony. When the Union of South Africa was formed in 1910, it became the South African Railways and Harbours. He worked there as an Accountant until he retired in the 1940's. His younger brother and sister settled in Cape Town some years later.

1891 census took place 5th & 6th of April- so either Ethel birth could fit.

Martin, just curious, do you know why they went to South Africa?

Martin

Martin Report 13 Jun 2009 08:03

Hi jansmith
Yes, I've contacted Victor. Our info is the same.
Ethel Pomeroy is more confusing.
I have another Ethel Pomeroy b 1892 Jan-Mar Reading(1837-1974) Berkshire Vol 2c Page 361.
In the 1891 Census Arthur and Cecilia and 2 boys were living in South Hamlet, Gloucester. I don't know in which month the Census happened. This could match with the birth of Ethel May Pomeroy
Year of Registration: 1891
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Gloucester (1837-1937)
County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 6a
Page: 315
However, Arthur died 25 Dec 1892 in Reading, Bershire Vol 2c Page 237.
If they had moved to Reading after the date of the 1891 Census, then the later Ethel, born in Reading in 1892 would be the correct one.
Arthur worked for over 20 years for the Great Western Railways and at the time of his death was an Agent for GWR in Reading.
This could tie up with the earlier Ethel May being in a Railway Servant's Orphanage. On the other hand, her mother, Cecilia was still alive, so why would her daughter be in an orphanage?
Confusion reigns !
Meanwhile, I'm going to try to digest all the info on Cecelia.
Thanks
Martin

Ehel's birth index then

District: Gloucester (1837-1937)
County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 6a
Page: 315

1901 census for her?

Age: 10
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1891
Relation: Orphan

Not sure about mothers details as census seems to fit the family and that is the only one for the marriage index.

Martin Report 12 Jun 2009 21:12

Hi to all you enthusiastic researchers. It's 22:00 here at the moment, so I'll try to digest the information tomorrow.
Ralph Alan Pomeroy was my grandfather. He had a brother, Archibald William. in the 1891 Census the family was living in Gloucester. They had a sister Ethel born in 1892, shortly before their father Arthur Shubrook Pomeroy died.
All three children emigrated to South Africa from about 1895 onwards leaving their mother Cecilia in England.
They all married in South africa from 1904 onwards.

I have a copy of Ralph Alan Pomeroy's Birth Certificate. In it his mother's name is given in the column "Name and Maiden Surname of Mother" as "Cecilia Tryphena Pomeroy, formerly Dyke".
Dyke could nave been either her birth surname or previous married name, I'm not sure what the normal practice for filling in Birth Certificates was.
So I'm still confused until I try to sort this out tomorrow.
Thanks to all of you for your help.
