The Pomeroy name has many links in Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Corwall. In particular to Berry Pomeroy Castle, near Totnes.
Ralph de la Pommeraie was William the Conqueror's Chief of Staff and was granted 58 Manors in the South West for his role in the Conquest. So the early Pomeroy's married some of the Saxon nobility and there were a number or noble families in the area. As a result, Ralph, William, Richard and Henry are common Pomeroy names. I can't however, claim any links to nobility.

Hi Christine
Thanks for your efforts. This earlier post by Helen seems to be the closest to being the right family, if they had any children.

"There is this marriage in Stalbridge- (Only John Harris I could find), perhaps this couple had children. Need to do a bit more digging!!

26 Sep,1812, Licence ,John HARRIS, Stalbridge/ Mary HARRIS, Stalbridge. Witnesses: Edith Harris John Green

"There could be a number of reasons for a couple to obtain a licence: they might wish to marry quickly (and avoid the three weeks' delay by the calling of banns); they might wish to marry in a parish away from their home parish; or, because a licence required payment, they might choose to obtain one as a status symbol."

Unfortunately, the only clue I have about Charlotte's parents is her father's name "John Harris" and "Holne" on her Marriage Cert.
We might have to treat this as "unsolved".
Thanks again
Martin

I think you must get some certificates now

There is no mention of John or Mary Harris.
Either we do not have the right Charlotte or her parents are not John and Mary. Is mary the sistere of Charlotte or her aunt?

This is Fanny from Helen's earlier post of 1841
!841 does not give relationships so Fanny might be Charlotte and Jane's sister or one of their daughters. Ann's husband would be their uncle
or brother. unfortunately I do not have access to 1851 census

Some of the wills were older and there are hints of possible connections to a titled family. Certainly the titled pomeroys have links to the same geographical area.

But you have not reached that stage yet.

Just read and bear them in mind.

Will:

I found this
"POMEROY Arthur Shubrook of Reading, agent for the Great Western Railway Co. died 25 Dec 1892. Proved Oxford 28 Jan to Cecilia Anna Pomeroy, widow. Estate £505"
With this inheritance, I don't see their 9 year old daughter Ethel ending up in an Orphanage ?

Gives Pomeroys and Harrises at Holne

Probably a bit early for where we are at the moment but worth bookmarking. I also see Richard seems to be a Pomeroy family name.

Hi Martin
Sorry I have been at a funeral all day.
Holne is near Ashburton Devon.

I have just found loads of Pomeroy wills some from Holne

http://www.geocities.com/pomerytwig/Willsfivefive.html

For instance

POMEROY Robert. Personal estate £107 4s 11d. 13 July. Will of Robert Pomeroy late of Holne in county of Devon, gentleman who died 21 June 1883 at Holne Court in Holne ,was proved at Exeter by Edward Mann of Holne, yeoman, nephew and sole executor.

I think you need to bookmark this and come back to it.

Martin- do you know who were listed as the witnesses on William's and Charlotte's marriage? and what addresses were given?

On Ancestry, when searching for Fanny and Jane it comes up with parish records listing father as John- I can't access this info, as I only have a basic membership. Perhaps someone else can take a look?

According to this Stalbridge Genealogy site Harris were one of the major names:
http://www.uk-genealogy.org.uk/england/Dorset/towns/Stalbridge.html#families

However- there is no reference to Charlotte or her father John.

Hi Helen
Thanks for you valiant efforts.
More info on Elizabeth Pomeroy:
"Death
Pomeroy Elizabeth 91 Taunton Dec 1870 5c 291
Need to confirm this through 1851/61 census- EDIT> confirmed in later message.
Making her birth c1779. "
I found these references on Ancestry: 1841 Census Elizabeth Pomery b 1781 age 60 Cornwall 1851 Census Elizabeth Pomeroy b 1780 age 71 Somerset 1861 Census Elizabeth Pomeroy b 1779 age 81 Somerset They seem to be correct.

Thanks
Martin

Martin-

Holne is in Devonshire- 1837- 1968 it came under Totnes registration district.

I'm going to have tp pass on this one- can't seem to make any progress- maybe some-one else can have a look. They maybe be able to work out some links through Fanny and Jane listed on the 1841.

I'll check in later.

Hi Helen
Charlotte's birth year is a bit confusng. Her Marriage cert gives her age as 34 in April 1849, suggesting 1815. Census records suggest 1813 or ,
in one case, 1814. All give or take a year.
Do you know where Holne is? Is it anywhere hear to Stalbridge or Totnes, where the marriage took place. They married in the Register Office if that's significant.
Hope this adds a small piece to the jigsaw.

I've checked Stalbridge baptisms from 1807- 1820- this is the only Charlotte I could find- but father is Samuel??

Jan,1811,Charlotte: Samuel,Sarah,HARRIS
Aug,1813,Charlotte: Samuel & Sarah,HARRIS, Stalbridge,Farmer

I suspect the earlier Charlotte died as these appear to be born to the same family.

There were several Harris births in Stalbridge around this time from different families- but none appear to have father as John.
