Info I know from census.

1841 Census

Richard Long c1780 birth Westminister Middx.
Mary Long c1781
Lydia c1816 who went on to marrying Frederick Gay
Henry 1c821? (calculated from 1881 census as 1816)
Fanny c1832

IGI For Henry BUT year of birth 1827 also Marylebone - on all census they appear to live in Westminsiter Middx.

Problem:- I cannot find any information on Richard Long or Mary other than the 1841 census.

On the previous thread it was mentioned that Richard was possibly Henry's grandfather BUT on the marriage cert of Henry to Elizabeth it says Richard is father and a Master Orris Weaver.

Any help or advise appreciated

This I believe is the death of Richard as I have him on the 1861 census
I have not ordered the death cert for this.

if Henry was actually still only 64 on 1881 census he would have been 24 in 1841 which would have been rounded down to 20 giving birth year of 1821

Sorry I should have mentioned I had him on the 1861 he was in an Almshouse and a widower aged 82

Thanks Lancashireann yes I agree the 1841 rounded up and down by 5 years I have taken the year on the 1881 census but I have searched either side by 5 years and can't find any info for a Henry with father Richard born Westminister.

Not sure but is it Henry you are looking for? In the 1851 census he is living with his sister Lydia Gay. DOB 1816/17.

I know you have seen this one but occupation is worded differently on FMP

I wondered if you may find a clue through his trade or the almshouse. Do they keep records?

On the north side of Rochester Row is a range of neat brick-built cottages, known as Emery Hill's Almshouses. There is a grammar-school attached to them. They were founded in 1708, to provide a home for six poor men and their wives, and for six widows, and also a school for boys.
Opposite this row of almshouses is St. Stephen's Church, which was erected and endowed about the year 1847, by Miss (now Baroness) Burdett-Coutts. It is from the designs of Mr. Benjamin Ferrey. It is built in the Decorated Gothic style of the fourteenth century, with a tower and spire on the northern side, nearly 200 feet high. The church, which is most richly decorated and picturesque, will hold about 1,000 worshippers. On the south side of the west front is a group of schools attached to the church, which afford accommodation for about 400 children; together with a parsonage, or presbytery, a portion of which forms a tower surmounted by a quaint, foreign-looking louvre.

The Orris weaving was a lucrative section of the trade -the manufacture of gold & silver lace and braid.

Christine thanks for the info. Loved the picture of the Emery Hills. So nice to see where you 4 x grandfather would have lived.

Victoria the Mary Fry is in the same area but the marriage is 1800 and Henry, son, was born between 1816 - 1821 so unless they had a load of other children may be a bit early. Although year would fit in with approx date of births - them both being about 20 -

I wonder how I would find out more info regarding this marriage.

I hope you don't mind but I have brought this forward from your original thread as I still think it is a
possibility worth following in the absence of anything better ?

It would fit in with the Richard Long marriage to Mary Fry, and also with the following christening which I
found at the time on IGI: (I don't know whether this was extracted or submitted and I can't check as it is
not on there now - they 'rotate' their info every 6 weeks or so - some is taken off and some is added
- Goodness knows why!!)

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find anything to prove this but perhaps someone else can?

I think we need to find a birth of a Richard to Richard Long + Mary Fry around 1801 and a
marriage for Richard c1801 to Lydia and/or Ann ? - Maybe he never actually married Lydia as he would have been quite young at the time - around 16 - Not too young though?)

The Ann with Richard from the 1851 is still with him as 'Ann J' on 1861 + daughter Ann E aged 8

Dea thanks for the input. I did notice the info you put last time when I re-submitted my thread.

1851 - Two things the age of Richard being 49 and therefore birth of 1802 this would be 22 years out.

Also 1861 Richard Long was in Emery Hills Almshouse and a widower

The family always appear to come from Westminster although the marriage posted for 1846 is ihn Lambeth
