Hi Jane, maybe we're all going down the wrong route right from the beginning. Could it be that Grandma was right and her name was Dora? We started off with that 1901 census stating that Dora was born in Cobourg, Canada. We then proved that she wasn't Dora, she was Clara. There is this marriage of a James Hogg possibly marrying Dora. Could it be them?

Marriages Dec 1892 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

***Clement Dora Preston 8e 912
Farrer Richard Haygarth Preston 8e 912
***HOGG James Preston 8e 912
Rigby Agnes Anne Preston 8e 912

Do you know when and where daughter Lily was born?

Jane Report 2 Aug 2009 14:54

Hi thankyou magaret. Do you think that the Clara in the 1901 is my great great grandmother then or am I going down the wrong route. My grandmother did tell me her husband was James Hogg so that still fits in.
I am just completly lost doing my family tree. All routes that I take just seem to draw a blank.

Jane, I'm fairly confident that Grandma had to be wrong. She's Clara L. on both 1901 and 1891 census, she married James Hogg as Clara Louisa Daintry and she's Clara Louisa on the 1881 census.

Jane Report 2 Aug 2009 14:21

Hi just read that the census might be Clara Hogg. I know she was definatley Dora Hogg as my grandma gave me the name.

Hi thankyou all for your replies. I havent been able to get on here any sooner due to work. I started my family tree a few years ago with my grandma but then she sadly passed away. So I have now decided to finish it. So I am new to all this and I am struggling understanding all this. My great great grandma is Dora L Hogg and is on the 1901 census widow living off own means born in canada. Her husband was James Hogg, they had my great grandma Lily who married John Bailey who they had my grandmother Jean Baily. Hope this is more information.

I dont know where to go from here.
Thanx again
Jane

I can't look at any image - my point was GR and whoever suppllies their 1901 have it transcribed as Dora, wheras Ancestry don't.

As for no 1848 Cobourg birth - well statutory rego of BMDs only began in 1869, and there's only spotty transcriptions of the OPRs before then.

Vera

Vera Report 31 Jul 2009 18:11

Just looked at the image I can see why it looks like Dora, but if you check the emumerators writing when he/she writes a D it is a capital.
What do you think?

If I search records at GR, I get 3 exact hits on the 1901 census:

Hogg Dora 1895 Durham West Auckd Durham, West Auckland
Hogg Dora 1889 Northa Allendale Northumberland, Allendale
Hogg Dora 1848 Canada Coburg Chester, North Rode

The first 2 look like the Doras that Ancestry has.

Earliest census was:
1842 Cobourg (Town)
District: Newcastle District (#) / Sub-District: ()
Microfilm: LAC: C-1344; LDS: 281226 Item 7

You'ld have to rent the LDS film to see this, I think.

1851 Cobourg (Town) Agricultural
District: Northumberland (#24) / Sub-District: Cobourg (233)
Microfilm: LAC: C-11740; LDS: 349226
Personal census has been lost, all that remains is the Agricultural Census
