If I search records at GR, I get 3 exact hits on the 1901 census:

Hogg Dora 1895 Durham West Auckd Durham, West Auckland
Hogg Dora 1889 Northa Allendale Northumberland, Allendale
Hogg Dora 1848 Canada Coburg Chester, North Rode

The first 2 look like the Doras that Ancestry has.

Just looked at the image I can see why it looks like Dora, but if you check the emumerators writing when he/she writes a D it is a capital.
What do you think?

I can't look at any image - my point was GR and whoever suppllies their 1901 have it transcribed as Dora, wheras Ancestry don't.

As for no 1848 Cobourg birth - well statutory rego of BMDs only began in 1869, and there's only spotty transcriptions of the OPRs before then.

Hi thankyou all for your replies. I havent been able to get on here any sooner due to work. I started my family tree a few years ago with my grandma but then she sadly passed away. So I have now decided to finish it. So I am new to all this and I am struggling understanding all this. My great great grandma is Dora L Hogg and is on the 1901 census widow living off own means born in canada. Her husband was James Hogg, they had my great grandma Lily who married John Bailey who they had my grandmother Jean Baily. Hope this is more information.

I dont know where to go from here.
Thanx again

Hi just read that the census might be Clara Hogg. I know she was definatley Dora Hogg as my grandma gave me the name.

Jane, I'm fairly confident that Grandma had to be wrong. She's Clara L. on both 1901 and 1891 census, she married James Hogg as Clara Louisa Daintry and she's Clara Louisa on the 1881 census.

Hi thankyou magaret. Do you think that the Clara in the 1901 is my great great grandmother then or am I going down the wrong route. My grandmother did tell me her husband was James Hogg so that still fits in.
I am just completly lost doing my family tree. All routes that I take just seem to draw a blank.

Hi Jane, maybe we're all going down the wrong route right from the beginning. Could it be that Grandma was right and her name was Dora? We started off with that 1901 census stating that Dora was born in Cobourg, Canada. We then proved that she wasn't Dora, she was Clara. There is this marriage of a James Hogg possibly marrying Dora. Could it be them?

Marriages Dec 1892 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

***Clement Dora Preston 8e 912
Farrer Richard Haygarth Preston 8e 912
***HOGG James Preston 8e 912
Rigby Agnes Anne Preston 8e 912

Do you know when and where daughter Lily was born?

Hogg Lily Preston 8e 600

And could this be the family on the 1901 census even though wife's name is Dinah not Dora? (Just misheard by the enumerator?)

1901 census
1 Back, Ribbleton St., Preston, Lancashire
James Hogg, head, 29, general labourer cotton mill
Dinah, wife, 29
Lily, dau, 6
Florence, dau, under 1 month
Ruth, sister, 23, cotton weaver
Nancy Howe, boarder, 24, cotton card room hand
All born Preston except boarder born Blackburn.

MargaretM Report 2 Aug 2009 15:48

Oh, she was Dora, mistranscribed as Dinah on the 1901 census. Here they are in 1891:
39 Salter St., N., Preston, Lancashire
Agnes Barnard, head, widow, 53, cotton weaver, born Cumberland, Windemere
Dora Clement, dau, single, 19, cotton winder, born Preston
James Hogg, visitor, single, 19, warehouseman, born "

Hi. The information I was given form my grandma was a Dora and James Hogg who had Lily who married John Bailey they had 7 children form what my grandma gave me with which she is one of them who was Jean which married my grandad Harry Booth. My grandma was born in Blackburn and I know that my great grandad John Bailey was a spy in ww2 and was in the newspaper. My grandma gave me clipping of him in the paper but bein young when she gave me them I mispalced them. Hopefully they are some where in the house.

Hope this is more information. My grandma gave me most of the information for my family tree even names for the Booth side of the family so I am sure she wouldnt of gave me the wrong name. Sorry if i am giving usless information. Iamonly 26 myself so really have no clue what i am doing and non of my family has any interest in helping me

OK, Jane, I think we're on the right track now. Your family is the Preston, Lancashire one. Forget all about that 1901 census that we started out with, you're not related to that Daintry family from Cobourg, Canada.
