Sorry Mel - I must have had difficulty getting the brain into gear this morning. You're quite right he couldn't have married again in England - sorry.

Carolyn Report 5 Sep 2009 13:07

Thanks once again Rootgatherer and Mel.

When I receive the marriage cert. and have hopefully checked the passenger lists for the 'Baradine', I will know; about Walters wife and whether or not she travelled with him.

We know that he and Ivy stayed together until death and had a very large family (about 15 children), but there is no record of a marriage.

I will keep checking this board during the next week, after that I will be on holiday for a week. When I return I will take up the search again.

Regards, Carolyn

But if Walter left this country in 1923 then he would not have come back to marry in 1927 anyway.

I looked for children with the mothers maiden name but found nothing.............................................

Good morning Carolyn

Not sure what date divorces are available up to on The National Archives website using their online catalogue to search. I don't see anything for Walter and Agnes.

I have search on Freebmd and don't see any issue from Agnes's marriage to Walter.

A search for a remarriage between a Fitt and an Ivy after 1922 only produced this result but I don't think it is your Walter. The Ivy M - M could be for Margaret and Margarets are sometimes known as Pearl.

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page

Marriages Jun 1927 (99%)

Baldry Ivy M Fitt Norwich 4b 250
FITT William G Baldry Norwich 4b 250

I don't see any children on Freebmd from this marriage.

With reply to yours Rootgatherer, the 1936 Electoral roll in Australia shows Ivy Pearl Fitt with Walter.

Your info. shows a marriage in 1936 for Agnes M. to Gorham in Surrey N.E. 2a 206.

Do you think it is possible Walter and Agnes divorced, and then both remarried? Are there records for divorces that I could look up The fact that they both had new partners in 1936 makes me think that this could be possible. Even though there doesn't seem to be any record of a marriage between Walter and Ivy in Australia.

Your thoughts appreciated. Regards, Carolyn

Thanks everyone, Sylvia(in Canada),rootgatherer, Mel, with your continuing help I am starting to pull this thing together.

First, I will apply for Walter's Marriage cert. Then I think I need to search the Passenger lists for 'Baradine' to see if his wife came with him to Australia. Trying to solve one mystery at a time. I haven't yet searched to see if he and Agnes/Kathleen had any children, (in England) so that's another search.

Do you think I'm going about it the right way, I'm open to any suggestions/guidelines from the experts?

Big thanks, again, Regards, Carolyn

Carolyn The marriage I posted with the two names on is right and they have just got the name wrong on the first entry and then put down Agnes's full name. Agnes and Kathleen are the same person!!!!

As to the marriage found for Agnes Fitt in Surrey this could be right as it was Surrey that they lived.

Had a look but don't see a definate death for Agnes before Walter and Ivy appear together in Australia. There is this one but it is the wrong area.

Fitt Agnes M 40 Norwich 4b 174

I also looked for a re -marriage for her (in case they divorced before Walter went to Australia)

This one , again the wrong area.

I search using both Agnes and Kathleen as a christian name as I think the marriage entries for Agnes Locke and Kathleen A (Agnes?) M Locke are for the same person. I think that she was just known by her middle name.

It could be that Walter and Ivy never married if he was still married to Agnes. My Great Uncle emigrated to Australia in the 1920s and last year I bought his death certificate. The death was registered by his "widow" to whom he had supposedly been married to for 16 years having married in Glasgow. In fact his real widow was still living in Glasgow - he had deserted her and his children when he left for Australia and they had never divorced. The real widow remarried as soon as she was notified of his death!

I would order the certificate for Walter ............. you don't have to say another name on there

When it comes you will see which woman is shown.

Then, if there is only one bride's name on the certificate, you could order the certificate for the other woman and see what that says.

You have all the information you need to buy the certificate.

Each one will cost you £7

Oh Sylvia, you are spot on.Yes that's him.

The family don't appear to know about the first wife Agnes/Kathleen whoever. Which is why we need to get copies of the marriage cert. We think Walter left England without his wife, need to check Passenger lists of ship "Baradine' P&O line; port of entry Sydney, Australia 1923. So what happened to her?

The records show Walter in 1931 living in Trafalgar, Victoria and a Farmer, no mention of a wife, either Agnes or Ivy!!

There also appears to be no record of a marriage between Walter and Ivy Pearl who could also have been known as Pearl Ivy. If he left Agnes in England it could explain why there was no marriage between him and Ivy.

My search has only been in UK, I don't know whether I can search Australian records with Genes Reunited. Any ideas as I don't know where to start. My son-in-law has had a couple of attempts over the years but keeps hitting blank walls.

Are you able to help with search for Marriage (if ever there was one) and the ancestry of Ivy?

Regards, Carolyn

Hi Sylvia (in Canada), thanks for your reply.

Do you think it would answer my question if I were to order copies of 'both' Marriage certificates?

I did wonder about the possibility of 2 Fitts marrying 2 Locke's.

Regards, Carolyn (in Australia)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Sep 2009 04:50

OK

off the top of my head, possible reasons are

a) Agnes was really Kathleen A M ........ and for some reason both versions were entered in the register

b) Two Fitt males married two Locke females ....... under this supposition, there are 5 names showing on the record, there shoudl be an even number. So one name is missing.

OK. Can anyone please explain why there are 2 entries for Marriage of Walter C. Fitt - 3rd quarter 1921.

Fitt, Walter C to Locke, Wandsworth 1d 1595

and under Locke

Locke, Agnes to Fitt, Wandsworth 1d 1595
Locke, Kathleen AM to Fitt, Wandsworth 1d 1595

Amy I misreading something here? I welcome any help.

Thanks, again, Carolyn

Carolyn have you thought about taking the 14 days free trial with Ancestry? you could then look up the passenger list maybe?? Don't put any bank details in though as if you forget they will automaticly take out a sub after the 14 days.

Hi Carolyn

I'm glad you have found so much information to pass to you son-in-law. And, yes it would be nice if you let us know as you find more.

"Nudge" or "n" in a posting is where someone has replied by typing that in and then pressing the submit button. That action brings the post back to the first page - in this case - of the "Trying to Find" board.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 3 Sep 2009 12:51

By entering Nudge or just n and submitting it it brings the posting back up to the top of the page.

Another question - what does 'nudge' mean, or just 'n'.
