About the possible ship giving dates which may help narrow the time he travelled.
"BARADINE 1921
The BARADINE was a 13,072 gross ton, twin screw, 13 knot ship, with one funnel and two masts, built in 1921 by Harland & Wolff, Belfast for the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co.(P&O Line). Her sister ship was the BALLARAT. She commenced her maiden voyage on 22nd Sept 1921 when she left London for Capetown, Melbourne and Sydney. She remained on this service until 1929 when she was converted to fuel oil which gave a service speed of 15 knots. From 12/4/1929 she sailed from either London or Liverpool to Malta, Columbo, Melbourne and Sydney. She commenced her last voyage to Sydney on 13/3/1936 and was then sold to the British government, but resold for breaking up at Dalmuir. [North Star to Southern Cross by John M.Maber]"

The address in the address bar at the top of your screen will say this at the moment

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1173911&px=1

Delete the end of if to look like this

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=

now add 637041 to the end of it to look like this

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=637041

Then refresh the page.

The family on that thread is about a William Fitt and a Coton.

Thanks again to Mel and Rootgatherer, this is becoming addictive.

I have found a marriage to Agnes Locke and will send for a Marriage Cert.
I want to look at the passenger list to see if Agnes travelled with him to Australia. She does not appear with him on the Aust.Electoral Roll 1931.

As I have found before when searching my own ancestry, the name used by a person is not necessarily the name they were given at birth. The family referred to Walter as Cyril (his second name). Not Arthur!!

Rootgatherer - I did as you suggested with the address and found the connection with Wm.Fitt and Mary Ann Coton they were Rohan's Gt.Gt. Grandparents), and I have sent a message to the poster, Norma.

I can't thank you both enough for your help and will try to keep you up with what I discover. I hope this is not too garbled.

Another question - what does 'nudge' mean, or just 'n'.

By entering Nudge or just n and submitting it it brings the posting back up to the top of the page.

Hi Carolyn

I'm glad you have found so much information to pass to you son-in-law. And, yes it would be nice if you let us know as you find more.

"Nudge" or "n" in a posting is where someone has replied by typing that in and then pressing the submit button. That action brings the post back to the first page - in this case - of the "Trying to Find" board.

Carolyn have you thought about taking the 14 days free trial with Ancestry? you could then look up the passenger list maybe?? Don't put any bank details in though as if you forget they will automaticly take out a sub after the 14 days.

OK. Can anyone please explain why there are 2 entries for Marriage of Walter C. Fitt - 3rd quarter 1921.

Fitt, Walter C to Locke, Wandsworth 1d 1595

and under Locke

Locke, Agnes to Fitt, Wandsworth 1d 1595
Locke, Kathleen AM to Fitt, Wandsworth 1d 1595

Amy I misreading something here? I welcome any help.

Thanks, again, Carolyn

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Sep 2009 04:50

OK

off the top of my head, possible reasons are

a) Agnes was really Kathleen A M ........ and for some reason both versions were entered in the register

b) Two Fitt males married two Locke females ....... under this supposition, there are 5 names showing on the record, there shoudl be an even number. So one name is missing.

Hi Sylvia (in Canada), thanks for your reply.

Do you think it would answer my question if I were to order copies of 'both' Marriage certificates?

I did wonder about the possibility of 2 Fitts marrying 2 Locke's.

Carolyn Report 4 Sep 2009 06:02

Oh Sylvia, you are spot on.Yes that's him.

The family don't appear to know about the first wife Agnes/Kathleen whoever. Which is why we need to get copies of the marriage cert. We think Walter left England without his wife, need to check Passenger lists of ship "Baradine' P&O line; port of entry Sydney, Australia 1923. So what happened to her?

The records show Walter in 1931 living in Trafalgar, Victoria and a Farmer, no mention of a wife, either Agnes or Ivy!!

There also appears to be no record of a marriage between Walter and Ivy Pearl who could also have been known as Pearl Ivy. If he left Agnes in England it could explain why there was no marriage between him and Ivy.

My search has only been in UK, I don't know whether I can search Australian records with Genes Reunited. Any ideas as I don't know where to start. My son-in-law has had a couple of attempts over the years but keeps hitting blank walls.

Are you able to help with search for Marriage (if ever there was one) and the ancestry of Ivy?

Regards, Carolyn
