Haha, thanks for the help anyway! Looks like this one may be a bit of a challenge. I'll have to go to Kew and have a look at the births at sea registers and see if I can get any further.

Regarding the Shepherd family, I've managed to find the street they once lived in on the Charles Booth poverty map of London (Bronti Close, apparently it's a mix of poor and comfortable people). I can't find anything about Villette Place anywhere though.

No William Young born at sea according to FMP - but there is one image where I can't see anyone called Young at all. Some poor blighters probably regretted being born at sea - they were named after the ship!

But of course he could have been born in his mother's maiden (or previous married) name and she married Thomas later. We don't really know where that might have been. We also don't know if they were on an outward voyage somewhere, so weren't in the UK on the censuses.

Ok, so you could say I've pretty much hit a brick wall with this branch of the family tree! Before 1901 the Young's seem to vanish off the face of the earth. I hadn't even thought that he may have been born on an outgoing voyage, I had just assumed it was an incoming one. And the possibility William may not have been born a 'Young' really does complicate things.

It's getting a bit late (even for me!) so I'll probably continue tomorrow.

Ah thankyou, that explains alot. No wonder I couldn't find Vilette Place anywhere!

I have been looking at the 1911 original transcript for William Young and Jessie,what does the signature say.
Is it Mr William Young,if so the M in Mr doesn't look like the M he has done in the word Married at the side of his and Jessie's name,what do you think.

I don't think so-at least he didn't use it on his marriage cert..

Or his sons birth cert ,well Lloyd hasnt said there was a middle name on there for him.
We really could have done with one too.

I don't think he had another name, as Maureen said it just says William Young on his marriage certificate, and it's just William Young on Henry's birth certificate as well.

Edit: Yes, a middle name would have been very handy for William or Thomas! Lol, yes the 'dead cowman' transcription is quite strange, and so is the fact the 'Henry' was transcribed as 'Mary', even though he is a son. The transcriber must have been having a bad day.
