Lorraine, you can search for these births and deaths on freebmd (http://www.freebmd.org.uk/) There are quite a few listed. The only Charles Bailey with a POB of Risely that I can find in the 1871 is aged 20 and living in Kent.

Lorraine Report 20 Jul 2013 09:33

Hello EverybodyI am STILL trying to find my gandfather's father, who he said was a Charles Bailey. Would anybody be kind enough to
try and find a Charles Bailey, born (and christened) any time between 1840 and 1855 in the Bedford, Bedfordshire area (preferably in Riseley). My grandfather wrote that he had been orphaned at an
early age, so perhaps you would be kind enough to look for a death of a Charles Bailey (born in Bedford) any time from 1871 until 1902.
(There was a Charles Bailey from Bedford in the1871 Census, but I could not trace him further). Grandfather Henry Bailey wrote that he had been born in Edmonton, so I suppose his father might have died anywhere, but more probably in the Bedford area or Middlesex.
Thank you from South Africa.

Lorriane, probably the easiest way would be to post on your other threads (anything will do even one letter. This will bring that thread back up on the board; to copy, highlight the info using your mouse (hold down the left button on your mouse as you move it over the text), press the Ctrl and C keys together; open this thread, click in the reply box and press the Ctrl and V keys together to paste into the box.

I have copied this over from the thread Chris refers to as it gives another line of enquiry:

I have in my possession, obtained from the LMA a copy of the Admission
Register 1878 of The StrandUnion Children's Establishment, which reads
as follows:
No: 1608
Name: Bayley Henry (in the 1881 Census he is Henry Bailey)
Age: 8
Parish to which Char eable: St.Giles
Date of Admission: 24 May 1878
Whether at Workhouse School before, and how long: No
Whether in any other Schoolbefore, and how long: Infant
Date of Discharge: Blank
Observations: Transferred to New Book

I have had a search done at LMA by their researchers and thisNew Book
could not be found. A friend in London also searched but it seems that this particular book ismissing.
I suppose the only course one could follow would be to read through the Minutes of meetingsof the Board of The Children'sEstablishment, Edmonton, to see whether Henry Bailey was discharged, and when.
I know he" walked to London" soon after he was confirmed.
If I could perhaps find a Henry Bailey who was born, or perhaps lived at some stage in Hornsey, it might help, as the address on the 1884/5 photo I have of a brass band, of which Henry Bailey is a member, is 122, Turnpike Lane, Hornsey, London.

Hi Potty and all the others who have kindly replied to my postings.
Potty, would you please be kind enough to explain to me how I transfer other threads to this thread, and also how to copy and paste only relevant information on other threads to this thread. I am battling!
I think it is old age catching up on me!
To everybody else you kindly replied to my postings, I am trying to get all the necessary information asked for and will reply as soon as possible.

A linked thread..
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1096484

Does the marriage certificate in South Africa show an occupation for Henry's father?

I find it strange that a father is stated as deceased on the military records and yet an address is shown for him....

Hi Lorraine, in answer to your question, you should reply and thank everybody on this thread - they will all be able to see it.

You say you have other threads with info posted to them - you should really only have one thread per family, otherwise people will waste time looking for info that has already been found.

You will find all your threads by clicking on My Threads, under Tools at the left of the board. You can then select only the threads that you have started. It will be much more difficult for others to find all your threads.

Perhaps you could copy and paste relevant info to this thread.

Lorraine Report 8 Apr 2013 12:04

Hi everybody, thank you Helen, patchem and Londonbelle for your
prompt replies.
Firstly Helen: (since I wrote on GenesReunited quite a few months
ago the layout of the programme has changed, so I don't know whetherI must answer each person separately. Could someonplease advise me what procedure to follow - thanks)
Helen: Yes I got the name Henry Bailey from his marriage certificate, which took place in CapeTown, South Africa in October, 1903. I have
the original of this certificate. He married Alice Maud Lawrance, originally from Southampton, who came out to South Africa after the Anglo Boer war to marry him here. His place of birth is given as
England on the birth certificate of his son Henry Lawrance Bailey(my father,) in Cape Town in 1905. All the research that has been done over the past twelve years can be found on my various threads, but I don't know whether you can access them. In 2007 I went to England
to research my grandfather and obtained a copy of his army record
from The National Archives, Kew. Iknow all about his life as he wrote his memoirs not long before he died in 1958, and everything he wrote
in his memoirs was confirmed in his army record,
Short Service
7 years with theColors, and 5 years in the Reserve
No. 10092 Name: Henry Bailey Corps: Medical Staff Corps
Joined at Aldershot on 20th January, 1893
Born in the parishof Edmonton near the town of London
British Subject Age 19 years 4 months Occupation Waiter. All this information can be found in my various threads over the years.
He was discharged in Cape Town in 1905. He served in England,
Malta and South Africa (for the duration of the Anglo Boer War.
I havebeen unable to find a birth certificate for him. He wasorphaned at an early age and never found out who his parents were.
Inhisarmy records his father'sname is given as
Charles Bailey (deceased)
35 Burton Crescent,
London W 5
I have not been able to trace this Charles Bailey.I had long discussions with him before he died and everything he told me hasbeenproved to be true. But who was he? He searched the
records at Somerset House on various trips to England but could not
solve this mystery. He told me that when he was orphaned an "uncle" put him in a home, but after years of searching homes, workhouses, orphanages I have not been able to trace him. I have an old photo of a brass band, dated 1884/1884, in which he played the cornet, andthe address on the back is122 Turnike Lane, Hornsey, London, but I presume this is the stamped address of the photographer. Nobody
has been able to identify this brass band of youths in uniform.I hope this information is helpful -I have ordered many birth certificates but none turned out to be grandfather, and for Edmonton also had no luck.
I look forward to hearing from you - please let me know whether you
can find my various previous threads, because they have lots more
research that has been done.
Lorraine.

Hello Lorraine,

Not sure if I've understood- so bear with me! Henry Bailey is your Grandfather. Did you get this name from your parent's marriage or birth certificate?

How do you know the Army records you have are the correct ones?

Sorry- lots of questions- but just trying to sort what are facts, and what is maybe.

Helen

Lorraine Report 7 Apr 2013 17:38

Hi everybody,
I am still trying to find out whomy grandfather, Henry Bailey, was!
I am now concentrating on the possibility that he could have been
Henry Charles Bailey, as his army records, when he joined the Medical Staff Corps in 1893,he stated that his father was Charles
Bailey.
In the Free BMD records there is
Henry Charles Bailey Birth Sep Quarter 1873
Marylebone 1a 547.

Could somebody perhaps see if there is a baptism record of this Henry Charles Bailey, giving the father's name as Charles Bailey?Or a baptism record or any other Henry Charles Bailey born in the London area in circa 1873? My grandfather always thought his birthday was 4th July, 1873.
Thank you so much from South Africa

Or maybe not...a closer look at the 1871 census (reproduction is poor) is that Henry is a grandson...and therefore really possible that the John above is his father and it is possible that it's an F as well. And there is a birth that matches too....
