Here we are in 1871 -- Samson is a fine old Devon/Cornwall (more Cornwall) name:

John R Lishman 30 - Coast Guard
Samson E Lishman 27
Emily E A B Lishman 7
Leopold Lishman 3
Civil parish: Worth Matravers
Town: Worth
County/Island: Dorset
Registration district: Wareham

Oh. Except that "Samson" is his wife, really Tamsen, I'd say. That makes her this one from the first marriage:

Penfound Thomasine Emma

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Aug 2010 22:56

1901, John, Elizabeth and Lola are together in Deptford. John shows as born in Devonport c1840 again.

Not finding him in 1851 or 1861 or a marriage before the birth of Linda.

Okay, this is his birth:

Births Sep 1840
Lishman John Rufus Stoke Damerel 9 390

(Stoke Damerel does = Devonport; a whole branch of my family mixes them up too)

So he married twice:

Marriages Sep 1865
> Lishman John Rufus Plymouth 5B 514
DALLINGER Emma
Penfound Thomasine Emma

Marriages Dec 1886
LISHMAN John Rufus Bethnal Green 1c 357
HOWARD Elizabeth

and only Linda's birth certificate would say who her mother was.

Nope, the 1881 census will say: ;)

John Lishman 40
> Emma Lishman 36
Edith Lishman 16
Leopold Lishman 13
Linda M. Lishman 2
Lola Lishman
Civil parish: Deptford St Paul

The kids' names *might* suggest Jewish parents, but I suspect they were just trendy. John is a labourer and the various neighbours in 81/91/01 don't seem Jewish, for what that's worth.

thanks for copy and pasting tip

There were actually loads of Patricks in the area. Try what I just did on spec: search for births in Greenwich reg dist 1899-1908. Many. Might be originally Irish but well settled in the area.

Actually -- check your records! -- John Lishman in the 1891 was born in Devon c1840.

Steven

Steven Report 10 Aug 2010 22:44

Lishman sounds Jewish !

Steven

Steven Report 10 Aug 2010 22:43

Again speculating, but Patrick sounds like an Irish name, could there be a poss that they split and Charles Patrick went to Ireland. I prob just got an over active imaganation lol

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Aug 2010 22:41

Yup. This is Linda in 1891:

Name: Linda Lishman
Age: 12
Estimated birth year: abt 1879
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: John
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Where born: Deptford, Kent, England

> Civil parish: St Paul Deptford
County/Island: London
Registration district: Greenwich

John Lishman 57

Exotic names for the times!

Can't find her in 1901.

Thank you Janey, am I right in thinking Deptford is in Greenwich. If you dont mind me asking where did you get this record. So there is a poss that Gilbert and Floradora that I found in previous thread could be Arthur's siblings...............Janey how do I copy the information on records onto these threads

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Aug 2010 22:32

I can't see Linda or Charles Patrick in 1901.

I also checked the IY to see whether Charles might have been in the Anglo-Boer war and possibly killed there, but no result.

http://www.britishmedals.us/files/iyp.htm

And I don't see another death for Charles Patrick.

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Aug 2010 22:25

The only way to find out who Linda was for sure is to get their marriage certificate !!

But your detective work seems good. You just need to go a little farther. And it is infinitely better to copy the records than to describe them; that's what we are used to seeing.

marriage:
Name: Linda Lishman
Year of Registration: 1899
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Greenwich
County: Greater London, Kent, London
Volume: 1d
groom on page: Charles Patrick

I found a Gilbert C Ball b1912 and a Floradora L Ball b1919, both mothers maiden name was Lishman, and both were born in W Ham. Do you think a possibility they could be siblings of Arthur?

Steven
