I searched the 1911 census and found that Charles had married Linda in 1908 and they had the 1 child, Arthur, with no other children born. I then searched FreeBMD and matched there marriage to find Linda's maiden name, Patrick. Next i searched the 1901 and 1891 census records, but couldn't find a Charles Ball I could be sure of as none were born in Islington, and couldn't find a Linda Patrick. I did find a Charles Patrick had married a Linda Lishman in 1898, so maybe Linda was married before ?. I gathered this information on the GR 1911 site, so if anyone has any better records, maybe they can have a look for me or otherwise its back to ordering certificates, which is becoming quite expensive and time consuming.........thanks Steve

So ... did you search the 1911 census for Arthur Ball living with Charles and Linda Ball?

They're easily found. Then when we search for any Ball living with Charles Linda Arthur Ball, there are no others.

I don't understand "this is as far as I can go".

To go back farther, you get the parents' marriage certificate, find their births and get the certificates, find them in censuses with parents. You know their full names and approximate DOBs, so that shouldn't be difficult.

To go forward -- siblings? -- you search for other births with the two parents' surnames, in case we haven't done that already here.

?

As I said , im updating my latest information , Arthur John H ball was born in 1910 in St Pancras and later married a Florence Watson, Arthurs father was Charles Ernest Ball (b c1884 in Islington) and was a motor bus driver. Charles married Linda Maud C Patrick (b c1880 in Deptford), they married in St Pancras in 1908, this is as far as i can go, so if anyone else can add more info it would be much appreciated

Steven, we've known all along what his initials were -- I posted his death right at the beginning:

Name: Arthur John H Ball
Birth Date: 9 Jun 1909
Death Registration Month/Year: 1977

and we have his birth and marriage.

Unless he were actually in the census as Arthur J/John H, nobody can have any clue which Arthur Ball he is! I think you've got that now? ;)

And again, please don't forget that *you* can find Arthur Ball-s in the 1911 just like we can:

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

But you have got to have something to match a 1911 Arthur Ball to -- parents' names from birth and marriage certificates -- to tell which one is yours.

If his name were Ebenezer Scrooge, you wouldn't have that problem. But his name is too common. Believe me, just be glad it isn't William Hill!

So just come back here if and when you have a certificate -- adding a post in this thread will tell everybody who has posted in it that there's something new, next week or next year.

And never ever order a certificate from anywhere but the GRO -- anywhere else is a rip-off.

You could go back to the top (your opening post) and click "edit".
You can then amend your title to include "still looking for 1911 look up please"

Steven

Steven Report 16 Jun 2010 22:24

Janey , the info you gave me at the beginning of this thread about Arthur (death and birth) is the right info , just hoping someone could find his parents on the census

Steven

Steven Report 16 Jun 2010 22:19

I didnt get the certs (cash flow prob), but i did find out that Arthurs middle initials were J H, then i checked on freeBMD and found an Arthur J H Ball, born in 1909 in Pancras. I tried doing the search you suggested me to try on the 1911 census site, but no joy, so was just requesting if someone with paid access to the 1911 census could try a search for me

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 15 Jun 2010 21:08

Unless you get the marriage certificate of these two people and learn *their fathers' names* and *their ages at marriage*, anybody doing any more searching will be wasting their time, don't you think?

What more are you imagining anyone can do, searching the 1911 census, than I did here already?

You have no way of knowing whether any Arthur Ball in the 1911 census is yours, unless you get the marriage certificate -- *and* the birth certificate that matches that death, hoping the birth and marriage certificates match re age and father's name. Neither does anyone else!!

If you *did* get the marriage certificate as you said you were going to do, then you need to offer up all the information that is on it!

Thank you Janey i will order the wedding cert, to make sure i get the right Arthur and Florence. Ive been doing this a couple of weeks now and got over 300 poeple in my tree, but this is the hardest line to find as its my mothers , fathers side and he left home when my mother was very young. I do now understand how to use the 1911 census thank you

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Mar 2010 00:21

The easy way is to pay ... or wait for someone with paid access to come along and do the lookup. (I don't need the 1911 for myself, so I don't pay for access.) To hasten that result, you might edit your subject line to add "update p.2, 1911 lookup?" for instance.

It can be fun to find things one's self, of course. So ...

Do a search for

surname BALL
place of residence ST GILES
living with
given name ARTHUR
surname BALL

and you will find that, unfortunately, there are more than one household in St Giles with an Arthur Ball. However, aha, only one of the St Giles-s in question seems to be the one in London. In the search results, click on "District/other". Then click on it again, to get the resutls in reverse alphabetical order.

Then do a search for, say,

ARTHUR BALL
in St Giles
living with
KATE BALL (one of the names in the results list)

Nope, that Arthur is 17 yrs old. Ditto for the Arthur living with Ellen Ball. Okay, struck it lucky on Emily Ball. That's the Arthur aged 1.

So now, look for

surname BALL
in St Giles
living with
given names ARTHUR EMILY
surname BALL

and you'll see there is one other person in the household.

Lather, rinse and repeat for the Arthur Ball in West Ham.

None of this will tell you which Arthur Ball is yours. Only the marriage/birth certificate will do that.
