Trying to establish whether the above is a family member. From bmd I see Albert Groombridge married Emily (Margaret) Ludford (registered in Mar. 1868) in Newington. Would be grateful if someone with access to London Parish Records could confirm that Albert's father was a Richard Groombridge, actual date of marriage etc.
Thanks

Dozey Report 16 Mar 2010 12:06

You may be able to help with my queries arising from this 1881 census record.

1881 census

GROOMBRIDGE, Eliza Head Widow F 33 1848 Charwoman Walworth
GROOMBRIDGE, Samuel Son Single M 14 1867 Scholar Walworth (Grandfather)
GROOMBRIDGE, Rosey Daughter Single F 10 1871 Scholar Walworth
GROOMBRIDGE, Nelly Daughter Single F 2 1879 Walworth (Birth date must be wrong. Samuel Duncan Groombridge died 1875 - death registered Sept.
AGER, John Son Single M 0 1881 Walworth (Illegitimate child or census error maybe).

Living at 34 Runham St Newington
St Saviour Southwark Sub District St Peter Walworth Parish Newington

Cannot find a birth record of either Rosey or Nelly. Think they must have been nicknames.

Is this Rosey?

Births Sep 1872
GROOMBRIDGE Rosina Ellen St. Saviour - not shown on 1881 census but shown in Camberwell in 1891 and in St. Pancras in 1901 but not found on 1911.

Have records of marriages as follows:

Marriages Dec 1912
GROOMBRIDGE Rosina P Soper Camberwell
Marriages Dec 1939
GROOMBRIDGE Rosina E Ingram Camberwell. Realise this is not covered by the records available on line and doubtful that this is a possibility anyway.

Cannot find any records that give me a clue as to given name of "Nelly" - this is only record that is in right area before SDG's death.

Births Mar 1875
GROOMBRIDGE Edith Caroline St. Saviour

Marriages Dec 1905
GROOMBRIDGE Edith C Camberwell

If Parish Records also cover deaths are you able to discover whether this is a non surviving child of the couple? Eliza's second name was Harriet. Just to satisfy my curiosity! The couple married 1865.

Births Mar 1870
GROOMBRIDGE Harriet Cordelia St Saviour
Deaths Jun 1871
GROOMBRIDGE Harriet 1 St Saviour

this could be 'Nelly'.

Births Sep 1878 (>99%)

GROOMBRIDGE Ellen St. Saviour 1d 156

Ellen was often known as Nelly

Only the birth certificate would give an indication of her father, if mother's husband had already died

Choccy

Choccy Report 16 Mar 2010 13:01

think you are probably right about 'Rosey'

Births Sep 1872 (>99%)

Sorry about that - I should have scrolled down further before replying.

I'll look now.

I'm sure your post about Nelly was not showing when I made my first reply. Only saw the one about Rosey- unless I'm going crazy! I had found the Ellen birth but had discounted it because of the date. Note what you say about Birth Certificate.

Would this marriage be in the records - know the 1939 one wouldn't.

Marriages Dec 1912

GROOMBRIDGE Rosina P Soper Camberwell

Thanks for the info. Not the right one then. I've come across a John now and then but not sure if he fits into the family. Can remember talk of various family members but not a John so far as I can recall.

Many thanks

Wonderful. Thank you so much. A great help.

Sure there will be some more questions on this thread in the future. Not sure on the dates some of these records go up to. Thought it was 1920 - so please excuse me if I ask for things outside their scope.

Thanks again

Missed these 2 because father's name was given as Samuel Robert:

Name: Martha Emmeline Eliza Groombridge
Record Type: Baptism
Date: 15 Jun 1892
Father's Name: Samuel Robert Groombridge
Mother's Name: Martha Emmeline Eliza Groombridge
Parish: Christ Church, Camberwell
Borough: Southwark
County: Middlesex
(No birthdate)

Father's Name: Samuel Robert Groombridge
Mother's Name: Martha Emmeline Eliza Groombridge
Parish: Christ Church, Camberwell
Borough: Southwark
County: Middlesex
(No birthdate)

There's another entry for Samuel Robert giving birthdate 28 May 1892. Martha Emmeline Eliza is next on list but no birthdate given for her. (Twins?)

Think they were on my original posting with deaths registered in the same quarter. Also a John (name of Martha's father) who also died young. Understandable - there were quite a lot of names. Do know that my grandmother had at least one set of twins that did not survive

Was there a problem with Florence Amelia? or did you just miss it because I asked so much of you. I do feel bad sometimes requesting all this info but as a pensioner I cannot afford one of these subscriptions where you can get hold of everything.

Sorry, just can't find Florence Amelia. I've tried all kinds of combinations even just using first names. No luck.

Dozey Report 21 Mar 2010 14:10

OK. Understood. One of the only four of my father's siblings I knew - so I know she existed. Probably some sort of transcription error. I've found name transcribed as Greenbridge, Grumbridge, Grombridge and all sorts!

Thanks for all your efforts.
