I was going to suggest that you ring the public library in Dover and ask if they would take a look at the ER for you. I find however that their website specifically states that they will not undertake such a thing (Very uncharitable). I would suggest an alternative.

Make a post on the Kent message board at www.rootschat.com. That is a free site which has a specific message board for each county. You will need to register first before posting but as stated this is free.

I have had some excellent local help from others on the site in the past so it is certainly worth a try.

The 7th child that was born to Ellen Davison (nee Hoare) was my paternal Grandmother Joyce Davison - born on the 22nd February 1928 at 13a Last Lane , Dover , the birth was registered on the 5th April 1928 - which as I said before is the last known date that I have for Ellen.

Out of the 7 children , my grandmother Joyce and her sister Florence (registered Flossie, but later took the name Florence Beryl - as stated on her marriage cert) are the only two out of the 7 I have managed to trace right til their deaths. As for the other 5 ....???

My father and his brother says that their mother had spoke very briefly about an orphanage that 3 of the siblings were together in, 2 sisters and a brother.

This I think could possibly be the youngest 3 - Cyril Claude, Florence and Joyce.

I cannot confirm this in any way. Canterbury has been a whisper where the orphanage was but again its all word of mouth and my grandmother never spoke about her parents, only that she was put in an orphanage from a young age.

I so wish I could access the library in the Kent area, but being in Milton Keynes, Bucks , it seems impossible to be able to do that.

I did contact someone who managed to search the Dover churches for baptisms and the only one was found which was :
11th June 1916.
Helena, daughter of Henry and Ellen Davison,
18 Worthington St,
father's occupation Sgt Major King's Own Lancasters, Helena born 6 May 1916.

Other than that , nothing :-(

Obviously the fact that no fathers name is recorded on the birth certificates of the youngest 3 children is a very strong indication that Ellen and Henry were not living together at the time of their births. Whether that was due to Henry being dead or, as probably more likely, they had simply parted company.

Presumably you have an address for where the 7th child was born in 1928. Just a thought see if you can see who was registered to vote at that address in 1928. Copies of old electoral registers should be available in the main public library or archive office for the area. Ellen Davison would have been 31/2 at the time it was compiled so she should be on the roll.

I think that this statement that accompanies the National Roll of the Great War may explain the discrepancies:

Entries in The National Roll of the Great War were compiled by subscription. Information for the entries was generally submitted by family members or the soldiers themselves. >>Information provided was not verified and therefore, may or may not be accurate.<<

I agree Jonesey that there is an error.

The first statement being from the National Roll and the second being from the Curator of the K.O.R.L museum.

Henry is stated on Helena's birth certificate but not on the later children's.

I just cannot find his death anywhere which is puzzling, and I haven't a clue as to what happened to him after 1919.

Really not sure what step to take next either.

That means that if Henry was not sent to the Dardanelles until 28/9/1915 he could be Helena'sbiological father.

However the details of his service as indicated in the email from the Kings Own Museum would contradict your opening statement of his service in the Dardanelles. The first landings occurred on 25/4/1915. The first battle at Krithnia vinyard took place on the 6/8/1915. Somewhere there is an error.

On Helena's birth certificate it states Henry as Sergeant Major of the Kings Own Royal Lancaster .

Just looking at an email that I had from the Kings Own Royal museum about Henry Davison , that says that he is shown going overseas with them on 28th Sept 1915.

Does that make any more sense to Helena?

I don't know whether if it does.

Well I done a very silly thing .....

Ann gave me the details for Ellen Davison death certificate,
it matched her age and location, so I thought I would give it a try and order it......

I received an email yesterday from the GRO....

I got the page and volume number correct, also the district.... but guess what I did....instead of putting Ellen Davison as her name I put Ellen Hoare ....(her maiden name!) ....


Oh dear.....that cost me 3 quid for the mistake :-(

I feel like climbing into my bed and hibernating until after the easter holidays !

I have found his medal card on Ancestry, which although tells me which medals he earned, it tells me little else :-(

I am rather frustrated with what little information I have for a very close branch of my family tree :-(

Well, as you probably know 70% of WW1 service records got destroyed by fire. You might check if he got a pension - he might have lost a leg or something.

Henry Davison born 7 May 1893 salford, manchester.

He enrolled into the Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment in 1911,

I have found his medal card but how can I find his service record??
I have found a service record for another great grandparent of mine but cannot find Henry's !

I have contacted the Lancaster Regiment which gave me some details of his movements but its the service record I would really like.

Your help is appreciated

I contacted Kent council to find out about orphanges too, as I believe Joyce was put in one from a young age.

Henry was discharged from service on the 15 June 1919 due to sickness, and thats the last date I have for him !

Ooohhh bring I the 1921 census !

Also Ellen ....I said the last date I had for her is the 22 Feb 1928 when her last child was born but ....me being a bit dim.... it was actually when she registered the birth of that child - which is the 5th April 1928.....


Oh I am so stuck :-(
