Was Francis evading being called up for WW1 ??

some are shipping ports - Newhaven's not far from me - easy way to move around then.

Francis was a Painter - Paperhanger 1911

I shall have a look at Scotland for Freda but I would put a large bet on Freda being
Trousdale

can some one tell us do scottish birth certs have more details other than parents and their marriage date -- would there be any thing about their parents ??

You're much better at this than me! Didn't consider the possibility that he was avoiding being called up to service.

I can see the Trousdale link but I'm not sure why she would have changed her name or why she would have chosen Burgess.

No births or Marriage in Scotland for Alfreda / Freda Emily Burgess.

well lets hope that when the marriage cert gets to you that we get some
answers or clues that will help.

for the 3 Trousdale women to seem to have vanished is a bit odd in its self ---

some thing may turn up yet

Will let you know when it arrives.. thanks again for all of your help.. I seem to be stuck in a few places with my family tree at the moment.. Both addictive and frustrating!

The mystery continues! The marriage certificate for Freda Emily Burgess & Francis Abson arrived today ~

Her condition is stated as 'W' which I understand means widow.
Her address at the time of her marriage was 16 Gordon Street, Goole
Her father was Alfred Jackson (Deceased) Gardener.

So I am right to assume that she was born a Jackson, married a Burgess who died; she then had a baby with Arthur Jackson who was killed before marrying Francis Abson in 1915.

I did a search for Freda Jackson in the 1911 census and found one aged 22 living on the Isle of Wight with a family with the last name Burgess. This Freda was a helper at the Bedford Hotel. Wonder if this could be her?

Hope you remembered that Alfreda / Freda Emily's father was an Alfred even if he was a Trousdale !!

I havnt found an Alfreda / Freda or Winifred Emily Burgess born 1890/91

Did you see the Freda living in Isle of Wight with Burgess family in 1911? Born in Hampshire. The Freda in my tree visited Hampshire when she gave birth to her second child.
Thought it was a big coincidence for a Freda Jackson to be living with Burgess family. However I can't find record of this Freda's birth either

Zoe

Zoe Report 8 Jan 2014 21:51

Mavis, I think she was born Jackson and married a Burgess because on her marriage certificate it says widow

Geography has never been my strongest subject!
However I just meant that my Freda Emily visited the area where the Freda I found in the 1911 census lived in the vicinity of.

I admit that a Freda Jackson living with a Burgess family looks like a possibility, but I can't tie them together anywhere else. They're both quite common names, so maybe not such a coincidence.

On the 1891 census - living in Alton, where Freda claims to have been born - there's an Alfred Burgess aged 39 and an Alfred Jackson aged 38. They are BOTH gardeners. Neither of them have a Freda living with them.

I will keep looking.

---------------------------------
LIVELY SCULCOATES DISCUSSION

At the Sculcoates Guardians on Tuesday, when Mr J Stebbings presided, Mr Eastman referring to the minutes of the House and Infirmary Committee ---------------------------------------- and so on.
a bit further on
A lengthy discussion as to whether the master and matron should have a domestic servant at the cost of £15 per year , uniform ensued.
Mr Eastman moved that this portion of the minutes should be referred back.
These recommended that Freda Burgess [24], an inmate, should be appointed domestic servant. ------------- and so on
a bit further on
Mr Locking [deputy-chairman] explained that the young woman Burgess was married and was unfortunately placed. Her child died in a fortnight.
-------------------- and so on

I have just given basic details but we have a Freda Burgess yet again -- the records need to be found and investigated if possible -- she had another child but where ?? it may have died Sculcoates, Freda's age slightly older but that may be so she could say she was married ?

That looks interesting Mavis.. I'm just getting very confused and a little pessimistic that I might not be able to solve anything. I contacted a society in Yorkshire to find out about the Goole Poor Institution but apparently there are no records remaining.

On the marriage certificate I have, would the name she has written down be her first married name or did she have to put her maiden name down?

Mavis

Mavis Report 10 Jan 2014 10:50

Zoe -- She would have put her married name on the marriage cert -- her father -
- if known would be in her maiden name.

but this Lady has gone from Burgess and Jackson as maiden name -- to me she is trying to cover fibs and seems to get in a muddle as to who she is or was.

who where the witnesses on the marriage -- are they interesting -- is there an age or is it full age on there.

I'm going to have a look at the pair from 1911 -- Arthur and Freda Jackson - Leeds - see what I can find.

A look at the local church records for Jackson and Burgess between 1911 to 1915 -- may be of interest - might discover the child of Freda Burgess who died.

if the baptisms and burials took place in the infirmary chapel think there should be Bishop transcripts [Copy's] of these.

an ask at the local family history soc would help to find things that may help.

Out of area, but I wondered if this might be Freda in 1911.

Someone needn't be a Lunatic at all to have been classed as one then.

Mavis the wedding certificate wasn't that helpful.. the witnesses were H Jepson & A Abson.. They were married in the Parish Church in Goole and Freda's age is 27
