How about tryijng to find some newspapers for that area at that time? Maybe there was some scandal or somethings which made changing names a good idea? Maybe check the criminal registers too. Some of mine had three different names they used- depending who was 'wanted'!

Mavis has had a look in the newspaper archives for any mention of the bigamy and James Arthur Jackson but couldn't find anything. He was sentenced in Leeds Assizes to 6 months. This might be why she decided to call herself Burgess; if they didn't divorce and she married Abson, would she also be guilty of bigamy?

I shall keep my eyes open for it.
