So why say they had only 6 children on 1911 and 1 died?

If as you say William died in 1910 why is he on it?

I really dont know.

But I have not found a Richard Goody/ey for Catherine jnrs father either.

Yes William Senior was born Colchester.
1861 and 1871 I have him with parents in Colchester.
1881 - No trace of him or his wife Catherine

They married 1878 in Preston
Their first child died

This is from Lancashirebmd

All with Mother MN : Tommony
GOODY / GOODEY
1879 – William (died 1883)
1881 – George Henry
1883 – James
1885 – Mary Jane
1887 – Elizabeth
1889 - Charles
1891 – William
1893 – Arthur
1895 – John
1896 – Hannah
1902 - Catherine

My grandmother (Hannah in the above list) told me that her mother Catherine also took in an orphan but her name was Josephine not Catherine.

This would appear to be that Charles Goody on 1901 aged 12,but I cant find him on 1891.
He has WW1 records on Ancestry though and was married by then.

Births Mar 1889
GOODEY Charles Preston 8e 631

No use then...

Death informant was Williams son then.

Name: George H Goody
Age: 10
Estimated birth year: abt 1881
Relation: Son
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Katie.

But on 1911 it says that C/Katherine and William have been married 21 yrs, which has been added by the enumerator as it is in Red,so that is wrong as they married 10 yrs earlier.

The other thing on that 1911 is that they say they have had 6 chidren and one died.

My maths are not brilliant but...

From 1891
George H Goody 10
James Goody 8
Mary J Goody 6
Elizabeth Goody 4

********************************
1901,.

Charles Goody 12
William 10
Arthur 8
John 6
Hannah 5

Plus Catherine 1903(who would be the 1902 birth I think) who is on 1911 makes 10 !

I do not think they are all this William and Catherines.

Where did the Charles aged 12 come from on 1901 for a start as he was not on 1891 !!

More thinking...

Also on 1901 William 1860 suddenly says he was born Colchester Essex?

Next question...
Are the witnesses Goodeys?

Only births I can see for that Catherine

Births Jun 1903
GOODY Catherine Preston 8e 605

Births Dec 1902
GOODEY Catherine Preston 8e 555

Mike * Report 2 Apr 2010 10:43

What benefit would there be in putting William's name on 1911 census if he already died in Nov 1910?

Did they possibly start taking the census early ?
It's definately his death cert I have, right address, age and everything,

*??*☻#◘?!#!*
Hang on a minute ..... rewind....
I have William's death certificate - Nov 1910 (It was his wife who died in 1930 , my mistake.)
How does that compute with him being on the 1911 census ??
Something's not right here.

Mike * Report 2 Apr 2010 00:26

Either that or the bride didn't know her own father's name !!
If you can't trust what it says on a certificate...... !
Thanks for the research all of you.
I'll see if I can find out who lived at number 52 in 1922 on the electoral roll.
Thanks again.

Which is what William at number 54 has down on 1911 for his occupation.

Maybe the vicar/registrar was having a bad day or needed to use his ear trumpet?

Mike * Report 2 Apr 2010 00:07

William is my Gt Grandfather.
Catherine Goody is my Grandmother's sister.
I didn't just pluck a marriage.. the age matched and I could find no other marriage for Catherine Goody. I ordered it to see who she married.
Richard's occupation is down as General Labourer (same as William has on his death cert.

Do you have Richard's occupation? Just on the off-chance he can be located/eliminated 1911!

Yes, that's what I have. No idea why it says Father Richard on certificate.
Does the entry for William and Catherine's House have 52 Allan St ? That's what's on the marriage cert for bride Catherine aged 18 in 1922.
