It says she was born Marina Devicich or Marina Devcic so Maria Dallas must of been her stage name. but it was worth a look.

Hello please could i have more help with this thread.

I now know Maurice William Dallas born London 1874 and married Annie Jane Brown born Scotland. worked in both New Zealand and Canada.

They adopted Blanche and i have managed to go back down the Dallas tree but my main mission is to find Blanche Dallas real family.

I now have Blanche death cert and marriage cert but if i can find the deaths for Maurice and Annie Dallas then i can order their death certs for them both this will take the cost down when i apply for Blanche info from New Zealnad.

I have just looked on BDM NZ and found one for a Elsie Mathews Dallas
1965/136615 with an Annie James as Mother and a Morris William as Father.
the 1963 is the birth year but I search 01/01/1901-01/01/1903 and it came up. Not sure why. You are able to order on line. So Helen found what I have as well. Not sure what the 1963 is about.

Hi there,
I'm in NZ and I've just looked up the BDM online NZ.
I found in the Historical Birth Regs
1963/136615
Family name: Dallas
Given names: Elise Mathews
Mother: Annie James Dallas
Father: Morris William Dallas

It was in amongst the 1901 - 1902 B Regs but because of the 1963 date it means there was a change of name that year.
If you call up the website,,
click on Historical Records,
then click on search
then click on births
then go down the screen and put that Reg date and number in the bottom box (Registration number) 1963/136615,
click submit search
This will bring the entry up and you can go to the end of the line
click on order product
and away you go to pay for and receive the printout (it's better than the BC).
Hope it goes well

My dau in laws grandfather was born in New Zealand and adopted. He had his mothers surname as a middle name. When you search for his birth record a later date comes up( 1950)
Her grandfather knew he was adopted and had tried to find his birth mother in later years without success. He found he had a half brother.

Dau in law had to apply to the court to get permission to see his adoption records. She had to prove her relationship with him.

The records gave his birth parents names and occupations. The father had paid $25 in 1912 to the court for the adoption to be dealt with. The records said the adopted parents had known the birth mother for a short time before .
Dau in law found out through research her grandfathers father died in WW1 unmarried. His mother had married but didnt seem to have had any children to the marriage.

Sad 2 sons out side marriage and non in

Of interest too is Archway.archives.gov.nz. You put in the word Dallas and it comes up with 383 items with the word Dallas

Many many thanks everyone this gives me alot more to look at and will make it alot cheaper to get Blanche file from New Zealand.

Im going to have a look at some of this info later today.

Quinsgran i belive Blanche also had a sister as i found a birth for a Martha Dallas and also found Maurice,Annie,Blanche and Martha travling together and on the ticket relitive is listed as Richard Dallas which was Maurice dad.

I note a few of you have differnt spellings for Maurice but i belive you all still have the right man his name seems to of been spelt different on many forms and indeed on ancestry people have his name spelt different on their tree's. I found Maurice living in New Zealand in New Zealand and Canada he was a Cabinet maker but one ancestry member also told me he was in the New Zealand coast guard.

Well i hope now with this info i can get some info for Blanche daughter she is now 72 years old and has always wonder about her real roots.

but one last question how come Blanche(Elise Matthews) birth info is online as New Zealand wont give me the info until i prove the deaths of all involed or paid a fee of $250.

thanks again everyone you all worked so hard i have been looking into this for years lets hope im nearing the end. :-D

Marriage records have

Annie Jane Brown marrying Morris William Dallas 30th March 1899 NZ only they have spelt Morris as Moris....

Yes the birth records are for 31/12/1901... As Judith sayd the fact that it shows as 1963 is when an alteration of some sort was done to the record relating to the adoption?
Again therre is the spelling error of Annie's middle name in the birth records showing her middle name as James instead of Jane.

Hi Persephone

the 1963 bit could be when Arthur Benn sent for info on Blanche so she could get her pension as Blanche needed prof of birth to get her pension here in the UK.

Blanche daughter checked for the papers when her dad Arthur had past away but couldnt find them so maybe Arthur throw them out as he remarried after Blanche which is another story in its self ;-)

sadly Blanche had past away in 1964.

I will have to have a look on my son's netbook later as for some reason im unable to get into my ancestry account on my laptop but can on his netbook very odd but must be something wrong with my laptop.

Hi Rob,

I was looking to see if I could find her after the 1911 trips, but like you say she disappears!!

I noticed Maurice dies in 1942, have you found Annie's death?

Persephone Report 12 Jun 2011 15:12

Robin as the marriage is an historical record you can order a cert or print out... I have just been searching as I had put this up regarding certificates in NZ sometime ago. You may get more history from that. Though our records can be sketchy in the early days. Below is what you should get if you are lucky.

Marriage Certificate: when and where married his and her names and ages both professions though sometimes the women's is blank, then Bachelor or widower, Spinster or widow and I think if widow or widower date of former husband or wife Birthplace then residence - sometimes this lists address but more than likely just place like Onehunga (which is a suburb of Auckland) and then father's name and occupation of both bride and groom and Mothers name and maiden surname. Then either the vicar, or registrar's name and a couple of witnesses.

Hope this might help.... Persie

Hi Dee

please could you copy and post Maurice death details on this thread i have never found a death for either him or Annie. I need to prove to New Zealand their dead which although they would be well over 100 years old that is the rule they have.

yes Persie i will do that thank you most things i have found Annie on just say she was a house wife on the trips across the falls it says she is Scottish.
