Barry, the answer to your question whether people in Johannesburg could read your posts is "yes" - BUT - whether they would actually read them or not is a whole different matter.

Bear in mind that the percentage of Genes members who actually use the site is relatively small. Factor in that the proportion of members who may be in South Africa is again very small and there you have it.

There's a miniscule chance that somebody sometime might just google the names you have given and your posts might have a very remote possibility of coming up in their search results - don't hold your breath, I'm afraid.

What happened when you contacted those newspapers that Janey gave you a list of?

Johannesburg newspapers on the internet:

http://www-sul.stanford.edu/depts/ssrg/africa/southafrica/rsanews.html

Business Day (Johannesburg)
City Press (Johannesburg)
Financial Mail (Johannesburg)
Mail & Guardian (Johannesburg)
Sowetan (Johannesburg)
Star (Johannesburg)
Sunday Times (Johannesburg)
Sunday Independent (Johannesburg)
Times (Johannesburg)

with links to all of them. The Financial Mail doesn't look too promising, but there are others that could be useful.

For the Star:

Place an ad in the Personals section / Missing Persons by credit card:

Jane ... Jean .. whatever. I wrote what everybody's thinking. ;)

Btw, I can't think why you'd think I expect you to jump on a plane, etc.

What I did actually say, in the post that causes you such distress, was:

A classified/small ad in a local newspaper might be an idea.

Barry

Barry Report 28 Oct 2010 23:57

JaneyCanuck Report 28 Oct 2010 13:41

I guess the question is ... what do you expect?

Barry

Barry Report 28 Oct 2010 01:07

Hi Jane
What do you expect me to do jump on a plane and look for them?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 Sep 2010 19:52

There are 3.5 million people ... and exactly how many of them read this internet site???

I think that's the actual question.

And I think the answer might be something like, oh, two ...

The thing is that nobody who reads this thread is going to know these people, and nobody who's read this thread has any idea how to go about finding people in southern Africa whose surnames aren't even known ...

A classified/small ad in a local newspaper might be an idea.

Usually, to find people, one has to go looking for them, not just hope they get found.

Glenn Report 6 Sep 2010 17:00

Unfortunately there are lots of killings here so that would probably come up quiete often.

Try using advanced search and set it to look in SA only. Also try "Coward SAPPI". The chief information officer's surname is Coward and gives his email address, try him.

Barry Report 6 Sep 2010 15:47

Hi Flick
Yes I'am thinking it like looking for a needle in a ploudup field , but i was just hopeing that someone on the end of that thread might know but as you said to be a bit realistic about it .One can only dream .
Thank you for your time.
Regards Barry

Flick Report 6 Sep 2010 14:59

Sorry, Barry, but you have a rather unrealistic view of what can be found............

You haven't even any idea of the surnames of the females, who one assumes would have married

No idea of where you live, but do you know everyone in the town/city?

Think it through.........................
