you are right that freebmd is usually the best site to use but Lancashire has some good sites all of its own. Not all records are on there but where they are it is v useful as it gives info which can't be found anywhere else

the 2 sites are for future ref:

lancashirebmd.org.uk

and lan-opc.org.uk

some of the info that your helpers have given you has come from these 2 sites

Mary Report 31 Jul 2010 17:05

The census you found with William 1795 James 1836 and elizabeth.

James married Isabella Hardman in 1881 they had neice Elizabeth Ann Atherton born @ 1881 Preston.
As far as I can see she is the daughter of William Atherton born Chaigley 1830,he married ellen beesley but they are only together on 1861 census.
Ellen is also Mary Ellen she was born Woodplumpton Lancs 1832 and died 1891.
On `87`/81/91 it says she is still married !!.

Anyway it is William 1830 who is brother to the James 1836 and Elizabeth 1823.
A tree with these people on say they had a brother thomas born @ 1821 but married a Ellen.

Chaigley is in Mitton parish, but there's no online records of baptisms after 1812. There is some Wm's marr ;

Marriage: 22 Nov 1824 All Hallows, Mitton, Lancashire, England
William Atherton - of Mitton
Ellen Snape - of Mitton
Witness: Edward Snape; Alice Walmsley
Married by Banns by: John Wilson, Vicar
Notes: [Record numbering increases by 100 and skips from 231 to 332.]
Register: Marriages 1813 - 1837, Page 78, Entry 332
Source: LDS Film 919152

but who knows how that relates to your mob - I can't find Thos in 1841 or 1851.

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 31 Jul 2010 15:03

could you please help me with something else if you can.....Thomas Atherton born c1826-1905 he was born in chaigley, Lancashire (this a various spellings on census records) it says on his wedding certificate that is Father was William Atherton he worked as a coal dealer i found a possible record of a William Atherton born c1795 lancashire with children Elizabeth b1823 chaigley and James 1836 chaigley do you think this is the right William????

mgnv Report 31 Jul 2010 14:53

There's only one Atherton with mum's MS=Crook born in Preston whose age in 1871 would be 7, so here's your Sinclair:

Births Sep 1863 (>99%)
ATHERTON Cecily Clare Preston 8e 413

Clearly, I'm implying an enumerator mistranscription of Thomas's form.
