Have just joined the Lancashire library site - could prove very useful.
I'm going to post a new thread about how to trace military records to see what I can find out about William Herbert and what happened to him after the trial.

Frustratingly it says Andrew is deceased! The witnesses were Herbert F HAndley and Alice Gillis.

Have sent you an email - look forward to your reply.

I have received the marriage cert for Thomas and Marian and it states Thomas's father is NAdrew Gordon. I've looked at bmd for Thomas born 1839 and have come up with 3 or 4 possibilities. Is there anyway of finding out more about his parents wthout ordering lots of certs?

Hi Sam,

If you're about and want to send your email address to me I'll try and send you the image of a newspaper article.......... now I'm not 100% sure it's him but it maybe the reason he changed his name??

Click on my board name and it will send a private message.

Hi Sam,

What instrument did Douglas/William play? I have been looking at archive newspapers and may have found a reason for his name change.

Hi Sam,

If you type in the name etc... on Ancestry and then on the left handside in a box it states Record Type you will see;

Birth, Marriage & Death, including Parish

Click onto that, then click onto See More then scroll down to;

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921

You will find alot of the London area marriages there within that time period. I did look to see if I could see the marriage to Ada Smith and also the marriage for Thomas Gordon and Marian, but it doesn,t look like they are there... sadly.

With Freebmd just type in Thomas Gordon and in the spouse box for surname just put in Handley and it should come up, then remember to click onto the blue page number which is 410, 5 names will appear and your ancestors will be in with them.

Now as i stated earlier only 5 names appear, 3 ladies and 2 men, this means that 1 man has been mistranscribed and is missing, this sometimes happens and can be found by trawling through the indexes, thankfully though it isn't one of yours.

Anytime I can help Sam just drop me a line.

Sorry to be a pain but I've tried FreeBMD and put in Mari* I get no results. I've tried typing in the whole name and dates etc and then get so many results and still can't find them. Also am not sure how to select London marriages as you suggest. What am I doing wrong?

Sam,

if you're searching for marriages on FREEBMD, once you have the 1 name up click onto the BLUE page number for the marriage and it will bring the others up.

When I search on Ancestry I use wildcards, these are for example;

Joseph Thompson, I would put in Jos* Thom*n. The * can be used after 3 letters and it will bring up variations like, Joshua, Josiah and Joseph and the surname would bring up Thompson, Thomson, Thomlin etc......

Now if you have a name that is really going to give you problems you can also use ?, the ? can be used in place of 1 letter, for example if I was search for Barnett I would put Bar?ett in case it has been read incorrectly.

You can also use * and ? together in the same name.... best just to have a play around, if you can't use the variation you put in it will tell you.

I really hope I've not confused you Sam??

I'm still intrigued about how you found the marriage info. When I search BMD I only get the index number which doesn't tell me the wife's name. when I go to the London marriages and banns I get thousands of results even with full names of both spouses and the correct year. I'd be grateful for any tips because it could prove very useful with other investigations

Hi Sam,

I can't see a death in 1927, I don't suppose they gave a date did they?

The marriages were on Ancestry.co.uk

They're in the B M D's section... just look for London marriages.

I'll have another look about tomorrow, I'm getting a bit slow now...... need sleep.

Night night, Dee xx

I'm overwhelmed by all this info that i wasn't able to find. Have located them on 1911 census.
Thomas Gordon trained as aband master at Kneller Hall - they sent me his records and a photo. They say he died in 1927 but yet again I can find no record. Maybe you can work your magic here for me.
