Hi again Fan,
Not sure when your'e back but will post this now as I am delighted and wish to thank you. It is all perfectly clear now - I have sent off for the marriage cert of John and Elizabeth just to cement things firmly into place. Can't thank you enough - still not sure how you did it and so fast as well! I was so proud of myself when I found Lizzie P. living in Greenfield Row when I spotted her as a witness at Griffiths wedding but what you have done exceeds anything. I had a close look at the 1881 image and yes I can see it is Llanafan and not Llanwnnen. Funny thing though I had looked at this several time before and was convinced it was transcribed correctly - hence me incorrectly finding John and Gwenllian.
Will let you know when I get marriage cert!!
Thanks again, Ken

Im back...
Worn out by Parents, sons and grandchildren but nice to have seen them all.
Lots of shopping with no husband in tow, relaxing not clock watching and thinking,,,oh dear he looks restless.
Mind you when HE goes shopping he takes longer to decide what he wants than me,but thats "different"of course.

Waiting to hear what the next marriage cert says and that it makes me correct or not so I know wether to polish my Halo or eat my hat...

Hi Fan,
You'd better get out the polish for your halo!! Certificate came back today for John Evans and Elizabeth Price and yes....parents John Price, mason and Evan Evans, down this time as labourer as you said he was. Ive said it before but I'll say it again - Amazing! Thank you so much. It really ties it all in, at one point I even had a niggling doubt as to whether I had the right Griffith let alone all the others but now it all fits. One question though, and this in no way detracts from anything, the witnesses at the wedding of John and Elizabeth are John Price, father I presume, and Eleanor Harries. In your opinion, do you think Eleanor was the mother,as seems likely, and has used her maiden name. Would they do this in those days for some reason.
cheers,
Ken
ps I never ever thought that I would find the wedding cert for Mary and William yet I had it in my posession all the time!!!

Still cant believe I have two marriage certs with same fathers names on. So clever.
Can you Fan, or anyone who wishes to help tell me how, if it possible, to look at parish records? ...cos whenever i look at sites like freereg they do not have parish records for Cardigan, or they are limited. What are the Ceredigion Archives?..so may questions.

Hello Ken.

Yipee, polishes Halo like mad (makes a change from the dud I heard about today..sigh

Those questions I think I can answer.

the witnesses at the wedding of John and Elizabeth are John Price, father I presume, and Eleanor Harries. In your opinion, do you think Eleanor was the mother,as seems likely, and has used her maiden name. Would they do this in those days for some reason.
No,I think she is someone else,a married Woman would not sign with her maiden name if Welsh in my opinion, unheard of to do.

The National Library of Wales (in Aberystwyth)holds a lot of the Cardiganshire parish records.
Few are online.Wales lags woefully behind on most sites for records.

The trouble is that a lot of them were Chapel and they are mainly not with the LDS but in Welsh Nat library or locked up in the Welsh Chapels so you need to know what denomination they were if poss to make searching easier.

Cardiganshire History Society may be able to help.

Why not tell me where you are at and what you want to find?
Who knows we may find things between us?

This cert will give you Elinor Prices maiden name if you dont already have it.
Births Mar 1861
PRICE Winefred Aberystwith 11b 75

Easiest one to go for as its a more unusual name than Mary Or Elizabeth Price.

Not finding the parents marriage at the moment.

FannyByGaslight Report 23 Sep 2010 22:50

On 1861 census Elinor is transcribed as born Gurnos, but that I believe should read Gwnnws as that is what it looks like on image to me,which comes under the Tregaron area.(Lots and lots of illegits born there !)I can tell some stories about Tregaron but not fit for on here !)
Also on 1871 it is transcribed correctly.

Name: Elinor Pryse
Age: 40
Estimated birth year: abt 1831
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: John Pryse
Gender: Female
Where born: Gwnnws, Cardiganshire, Wales

And here is a possible marriage at the right time and place, and also the only one coming up in Cardiganshire that could be them(I think).

Marriages Dec 1851
Evans Elinor Tregaron 27 117
Jones Elinor Tregaron 27 117
Price John Tregaron 27 117

Which one he is married to is another matter, but easily found out in the morning (I hope)

My money goes on Elinor Jones.

On 1861 they were next door to William and Mary Pryse and here is a John Pryse unmarried with those parents names and the parents are the same years born as 1861 and have the same occupations, but Johns occupation is wrong, although he could have changed jobs in the following 10 yrs of course...

Which now brings in a possible marriage but Elinor is Ellen on it?

Marriages Dec 1850

Hughes Anne Aberystwith 27 36
Jenkins Elizabeth Aberystwyth 27 36
Jones David Aberystwyth 27 36
Jones Eliza Aberystwyth 27 36
>>>Pryse John Aberystwyth 27 36

Winefreds birth cert is needed to be sure here I think.

Although I dont think it is the 1850 marriage personally, I cant find a John Pryse married to an Ellen on 1851

FannyByGaslight Report 24 Sep 2010 21:55

After a short phone call this morning I found that my money went on the correct bride for John Price.

They married in Gwnnws Tregaron in 1851

Marriages Dec 1851
Jones Elinor Tregaron 27 117
Price John Tregaron 27 117

But of course I was not able to get more info as that is against the house rules without the transfer of money.

But as I said last night ,Winefreds birth cert will confirm that it is the correct marriage for them.

Hi Fan,
rented a cottage in Fishguard for four nights. Did some coastal walks, one around Strumble head and one from Fishguard to Parog, newport. Killed! both were 8 miles of ups and downs and in not fit! One day we drove to Aberystwyth and called in .....Llanafan!!!! Spent an hour looking for Pryces in graveyard. Sad or what. Didnt find any either.
Still getting my head around your post so dont think i dont appreciate it, just that im a bit slower than normal.(that is very, very slow!) Back to work tomo and not happy! Should be grateful i have a job I hear people say so yea will have a positive attitude in morn. I hope.
speak tomo,
ken.
ps do you know west wales well.

Certainment I know West Wales well Ken..!
Went to Primary school Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion.
Then Comp back in Pembs and then back to a Comp in Ceredigion, been here 46 yrs now,English born but Welsh bred.
Parents bought and sold farms a lot when I was growing up..and even in Carmarthenshire in my late teens.

My other half is from Aberystwyth and my eldest sons fathers family are all Cardiganshire folk.

Lived all over the West of Wales except for some years working in London and a 2 yr trial in Somerset with parents when they moved there, didnt like it,and live near Carmarthen now.

Not sad to look for dead rellies in graveyards, interesting, trouble is all mine are in paupers graves with no headstones on the whole and all in London ,Dorset and Somerset.
Maybe yours were Chapel (highly likely)so you need to look further afield than Llanafan churchyard.

Hi Fan,
I have had a week you wont believe in work and my brain is numb!! Actually only worked two days! Im posting this so you dont think I dont appreciate your work. I have added Jones to my tree. If you want i can send you a link to my tree. Even though I struggle getting the info I have put a lot of work into it and it does look pretty stunning, even if I do say so myself!! You may find it of interest to pass on or use yourself. It is created in mycanvas, not sure if im allowed to say about other sites. I would need your email in order to do this. I really think its worth a look. Of course, you are probably aware of this site anyway and of the resources it offers. I have added pictures and narratives to my tree. Have a think if you would like to see it and i will send link to you.
still studying your last few posts but brain wont click in!! Maybe soon.
Can anyone have access to local registry records ? Trying to find info on web about this but none found so far,
cheers ken

Thank you for the offer of a look at your tree Ken but I really dont understand other peoples trees very well.
Mine is not as other peoples is done it would seem after looking at a few others, but I understand it,and it is all on paper in a file.

What do you mean by this?

Can anyone have access to local registry records ?

hI fan,
its nothing really. ive been doing some on line tutorials to try and understand a logical way of finding relatives as i always seem to get overloaded with info and then it all falls apart! I was wondering who you phone as you did to help me on several occasions. The only contact I have is with the GRO - I must have about 30 certs in my possesion (about 10 of which were duds! - but at least they narrowed things down). Im not really sure what i meant to be honest - just thought there was a way of getting info from local sources other than online censuses etc.
Forget about that question is best!!
Looking for bargain cottages again at mo, really love the west wales coastline.Saw 5 or 6 seals last time on strumble head - amazing!
Will go searching in some Chapels next time for the elusive Pryces!!
thanks againffor all you have done,
Ken

I phoned the local registrar whom I am on fairly good terms with, same school etc.
A case of not what you know ,but who you know.
But they do know that if I phone I have ALL the details possible so that they can pinpoint it almost exactly to save a search of an hour or so.
I only do it on rare occasions as I do not want to be seen taking the Mick.
So you got lucky..But only so much detail will be passed as the full works have to be paid for.

Bargain cottages to rent or buy ?And which area?Fishguard?
Cardigan Bay is well known for its Seals,Dolphins and Porpoises...
You want to try further down toward Cardigan, there are some beautiful littleknown coves/bays that are stunning.
We visited a couple this year again with the grandchildren, but I used to go as a child to some of them.

And every year to Tenby on the School Trip and the Chapel Day out.And if we were VERY lucky we would get to go to Manobier Castle as WELL as Tenby beach for our School trip.
I would have prefered to go just to the castle myself, found it much more interesting, even as an 8 yr old when I first went there.
