Thank you Polly. This has taken a different lead and I'm still unsure. I suspect I will have to try and obtain his birth certificate. I have at date of his marriage to my grandmother Elizabeth Payne on 31/07/1881 at Clifton St Phillip & Jacob and the date of his death 18/10/1936.

Its the connection of Clifton St Phillips & Jacob seems to much of a coincidence, is this person in the 1861 Census my grandfather?

Would some kind soul please help me? As I have my grandparents marriage date etc won't this provide the names of their parents this may give me a lead to establish his parentage or am I going about this the wrong way please?

Thank you in advance.

Hello Christine, because it's a fairly common name you need to order a copy of his marriage certificate to get his father's details. That will help you trace him more accurately in the census.

You can order the certificate online from GRO - http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ They cost £9.25

The references you need are here (from FreeBMD):

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Sep 1881
EVANS William Bristol 6a 72
PAYNE Elizabeth Bristol 6a 72

Same William at the same address in 1871. This time relationship given as grandson:

EVANS, Sarah Head F 58 1813 Wiltshire ** Greengrocer
JAY, Louisa Daughter F 30 1841 Gloucestershire
LEWIS, Selina Daughter F 27 1844 Gloucestershire
EVANS, Anna Daughter F 20 1851 Somerset
>>EVANS, Willie Grandson M 12 1859 Wiltshire
LEWIS, Margarat Granddaughter F 2 1869 Middlesex

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jan 2011 15:28

In 1881 he's living with Selina (who is now Mrs Goad) and family:

GOAD, Robert Head Married M 30 1851 Greengrocer Ermington Devon
GOAD, Selina Wife Married F 33 1848 Bristol Gloucestershire
LEWIS, Margaret Step Daughter Single F 12 1869 Scholar London Middlesex
GOAD, Frederick W Son Single M 7 1874 Scholar Twerton Somerset
EVANS, William Boarder Single M 22 1859 Cabinet Maker Warminster Wiltshire

Registration District: Bath Sub District: Lansdown

Civil Parish: Bath Walcot

Address: 36, Kingsmead St, Bath Walcot
County: Somersetshire

Note how Selina has lopped a few years off her age since 1871 - probably to close the gap with her husband (wasn't the done thing to have toyboys back then!). Could Selina be William's mum?

Christine - do you know what your William's occupation was?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jan 2011 15:34

In 1891 he's still a cabinetmaker and now married to an Elizabeth!

EVANS, William Head Married M 32 1859 Cabinet Maker Warminster Wiltshire
EVANS, Elizabeth Wife Married F 35 1856 Warminster Wiltshire
EVANS, Louisa J Daughter F 4 1887 Bristol
JAYNE, John Boarder Single M 22 1869 French Polisher Bath Somersetshire

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jan 2011 15:45

And finally in 1911:

EVANS, William Head Married M 52 1859 Cabinet Maker Wilts Warminster
EVANS, Elizabeth Wife Married 31 years F 55 1856 Domestic Wilts Crockerton
EVANS, Wilhemina L Daughter Single F 24 1887 Domestic Glos Bristol
EVANS, John Harold Williams Son Single M 16 1895 Machinist Glos Bristol
CROSSLEY, Jim Boarder Married M 51 1860 Engineer Yorks Liversedge
BARRETT, John Boarder Single M 39 1872 Packing Care Maker Dublin Ireland

Registration District: Bristol Sub District: Bristol Central Enumeration District: 20 Parish: Bristol

Address: 105 Clarence Road Redcliffe Bristol
County: Gloucestershire

** Original says they had 2 children living, 1 had died.

I have a feeling that Louisa in 1891 and Wilhelmina L may be one and the same.

Christine

Christine Report 29 Jan 2011 18:25

Marie with your information which is absolutely brilliant I believe may have uncovered 5 years of hitting a brick wall. I have ordered my grandparents marriage certificate to confirm. Indeed Louisa and Wilhelmina is the same she is my aunt!

Well done and thank you so much
