Christine, it looks like you're editing your first post on this thread to ask for new information. Trouble with that is it's not immediately obvious that it's new. Best thing to do is just to add a new post to the bottom of the thread saying what the new info is that you require.

I'll now go and have a look for Selina!

Something top bear in mind - on the 1871 census that I posted where Selina is with the Evans she is down as the daughter. I've just had a look at the original 1871 census and her marital status is "widow" so I'm assuming she would be Selina Evans at birth.

Whoops, thank you for the tip your help yet again Marie, thank you so much and I'll make sure I only add to the bottom from now on!

Thank you Ann-Marie I had not thought about sensible logic. I'm trying to establish who William's mother is. If she was a Lewis (married name) she would not have registered William as an Evans? Or is logic not reigning again??

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 31 Jan 2011 20:13

If she is William's mother then he may have been born before she married.

I've found these, but they are only possibilities:

Marriages Sep 1868
Brewer Henry Bath 5c 952
>>EVANS Selina Bath 5c 952
>>Lewis Henry Bath 5c 952
Taylor Louisa Bath 5c 952

Deaths Jun 1870
Lewis Henry age 23 Bath 5c 494

Thank you Ann-Marie, food for thought. Would there be a possibility of seeing if Selina Evans gave birth to William in 1856/57? Or is this trying to find a needle in a haystack?

Thank you again Ann-Marie. So in 1871 Mrs Evans Snr had two married daughter's living with her just wondering which sister was married to William's actual father?

EVANS, Sarah Head F 58 1813 Wiltshire ** Greengrocer
JAY, Louisa Daughter F 30 1841 Gloucestershire
LEWIS, Selina Daughter F 27 1844 Gloucestershire
EVANS, Anna Daughter F 20 1851 Somerset
>>EVANS, Willie Grandson M 12 1859 Wiltshire
LEWIS, Margarat Granddaughter F 2 1869 Middlesex

MarieCeleste Report 31 Jan 2011 20:47

Christine, all of the census gives William's birthplace as Warminster c1859.

There are LOADS of William Evans but I did find this:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Mar 1859
EVANS William Warminster 5a 153
Evans William Warminster 5a 155

I think it's possibly the same record but the page number may have been mis-transcribed on one (but which?). GRO might be able to help - http://www.gro.gov.uk

If you want to rummage around for records go to FreeBMD - http://www.freebmd.org.uk

I suppose we can't rule Louisa out either, it was just that William went with Selina when she married Mr Goad.

Christine

Christine Report 31 Jan 2011 20:49

Thank you Catherine but I believe Selina to be born an Evans as it ties up well she must have married a Mr Lewis as set out in Ann-Marie's possibility. This looks promising, he didn't last long 2 years. So if she had an illegimate son, then married, widowed in two years and married again she was a pretty busy girl!

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 31 Jan 2011 20:51

Louisa appears to have married 1867:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Jun 1867
>>Evans Louisa Mary Bath 5c 1046
>>JAY James Bath 5c 1046
LINDSEY Charlotte Bath 5c 1046 view
TARRANT William Bath 5c 1046

Christine Report 31 Jan 2011 22:06

Ann-Marie, this maybe a long shot but William eventually marries Elizabeth (who was born in Warminster) and has a daughter Wilhermina Louisa Evans she was my Aunt and John Harold William Evans (my father). Is the reason Wilhermina has been given a middle name of Louisa????
