Victoria....Do you have any of Ellen's childrens names...or was the one listed on the Census her only child to John Moon..?

Have found them on 1881 Census...

Yes her children are as follows:
Jerome Moon 1854 (this is who we descend from)

I can find them on the census too ........... just can't find a birth for her, or a marriage for her parents as have no idea who her mother is?? On her marriage cert her surname is Macarte, think this may have been a mistake as she hasn't signed it so wouldnt have been able to read it was spelt incorrectly. Think maybe it was her accent that made it sound that way?

Victoria...have you checked to see if there were McCarthy's were in the area where Ellen married?

Incidentally..."Jerome" was Jeremiah...(Check 1881 Census)...Have you the Birth cert..?

No I havn't, so being naive if I do that then that could possibly bring up cousins etc?? I don't have the birth cert, I have his marriage which he puts himself down as Jerome so left it as that as thats the'hard' proof I had. I dont have an 1881 census attatched to him so will have a look now. John Moons father was joseph moon/moone who married francis freeland, and then phoebe harmer. Thank you.

Given that John and Ellen appear to have followed Trad.naming patterns for the children and assuming there is none "missing" in the early years of the marriage I would be looking for a McCarthy couple Jeremiah and Mary.

What was Ellen's fathers Occup ...?

Thank you for that. Will keep looking for a Jeremiah and Mary although I suspect very common names!! His occupation on her marriage cert is a labourer.

Victoria...Does it state on her MC where exactly she was living at the time of the marriage and who were the Witnesses ?

It states them living in Etchingham, no address. The witnesses were Levi Hayler and Mary Denis. They were married in Ticehurst.
