Victoria ...What you need to then is to get Mary's death Cert. which will give you her maiden name.....
I imagine she died in Brighton as the family dont seem to have moved from there.
Have you checked Free BDms for a Mary McCarthy Death....?
Check out the Census from 1851-1880 see when she does not appear with Jeremiah...That will give you a time frame to work with.

Thank you, will look at those. The thing is I can't find a Mary and Jerry with a daughter anywhere in the cunsuses? The thing is I suppose she was old enough to be living apart from them. If I order the death certs I just need to keep fingers crossed that Ellen is named on it!

MCCARTHY Jeremiah 1801 Ireland Brighton, Saint Peter?s View
MCCARTHY Mary 1811 Ireland Brighton, Saint Peter?s View
MCCARTHY Mary 1843 Ireland Brighton, Saint Peter?s View
MCCARTHY Catharine 1845 Ireland Brighton, Saint Peter?s View

MCCARTHY Patrick 1821 Ireland Brighton, Saint Peter?s View
MCCARTHY Ellen 1823 Ireland Brighton, Saint Peter?s

You quoted these earlier? Are they marriages?
Thank you for all your help, your a star!

Victoria.....They are some of the McCarthy's in Brighton on the 1851 Census..You need to check them out...
Ellen would no doubt have been working and not living at home...she certainly would'nt be listed on a Mary McCarthy Death Cert as she was already married by then...would likely be Jerry...
Get a check of the 1851 Census first.

I have him in 1881 lodging (the record you found). I know this is definately him as his death cert states here and Ellen was the informant. In 1861 is a record for a Jeremiah McCarthy fom Cork, a labourer and widowed living with a Margaret McCarthy, daughter. They are in St Margarets, Middlesex. That is the only records I can find from Cork or Ireland and a labourer. I really am at a loss??? Perhaps I could look for his wifes death (poss Mary) in that area?
