I've checked 1881, and it would appear that in 1875, Thomas Grimshaw married Ellen...........

All the patients listed under the RG ref posted by Ozibird were males.

Helen is my cousin, she does work very hard so prob not had time to come back, but we are both extremely grateful for all your help. We have had a great deal of problems with Alfred. for a long time we have followed the wrong alfred, as in the one with the wife Maycock. so thank you to everyone for your trouble and efforts. I do not look here as much as I should either.
Christine nee Jarvis (in Kent)

Sorry I have not been on before now but running my own business seems to get in the way.

I will try to give you more information and answer your questions.
With the exception of the 1881 census and his marriage to Martha Jane Berridge I have traced Alfred from being
Bap:10/2/1856 in Inghm, Lincs
1861 census with family in Snenton Notts -scolar
1871 census with family in Snenton notts - errand boy
1886 per daughter Elizabeth's birth cert - groom Martha Jane registered the birth
1891 census in Lily street notts - groom Sorry JaneyCanuck
(his daughter Elizabeth is living with his mother in Burton joyce)
1896 death cert Martha Jane - tram car inspector
1896 marriage to Harriet Cornhill nee Smith - tram inspector
1901 with new family - nottingham -tram inspector
1911 with family nottingham - no job
1932 death cert nottingham formerly electrians store keeper

Sorry about the typo errors but the suranme is BERRIDGE and her date of birth 1857ish

The Borough Asylum is the Mapperley Hospital, does anyone know if there are still records kept of people who have been there and where they are kept?

The marriage to Marha Jane Maycock cannot be right as per her marriage cert it gives the father's Name as Maycock and that she is a spinster of 19.

Flick when he remarries in 1896 he stated he was a widower

Thanks for the lead on Martha Jane Berridge's possible birth in 1856 and on the 1861 census .

So I am trying to find Alfred Jarvis in 1881 and his marriage to Martha Jane Berridge and any record of Martha Jane in the 1871 and 1881 census.

Thanks for your help
Helen

cannot find any marriage of Martha Jane Berridge at all

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Dec 2010 19:59

I think this must be the Martha Jane Maycock who married an Alfred Jarvis in 1875; she bears a strong resemblance to Martha J Berridge from 1861:

1871

Name: Jane Maycock
Age: 14
Estimated birth year: abt 1857
Relation: Cousin
Where born: Nottinghamshire, England

Civil Parish: Birmingham
Town: Birmingham
County/Island: Warwickshire
Registration district: Birmingham

Thomas Maryo 41 - it's Mayo - Retail Brewer - born Herefordshire
Maria Gallagher 32 - it's Mayo - born Taddington, Derbyshire
Jane Maycock 14 - no occupation given
William E Goodall 32 - servant

(Maria Gallagher is a lodger in the preceding household, and the transcriber entered her name instead of Maria "ditto" to Mayo.)

"The marriage to Marha Jane Maycock cannot be right as per her marriage cert it gives the father's Name as Maycock and that she is a spinster of 19."

What is the father's given name and occupation?

Marriages Sep 1861
Maycock Maria Aston 6d 300
Mayo Thomas Aston 6d 300

1861

James Maycock 49
Maria Maycock 50
Maria Maycock 21
Min Fred Maycock 15
- all born Bakewell, Derbyshire
Civil Parish: Birmingham

Frederick Berridge, Martha J Berridge's father in 1861, was born in Bakewell, Derbyshire.

I can't find a marriage for Frederick Berridge and Mary ...

In fact, Frederick Berridge seems to exist in the 1861 census and nowhere else.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Dec 2010 20:41

In 1861, Annie L Berridge is shown as born in Manchester.

No such birth. But:

Births Jun 1852
MAYCOCK Annie Louise Chorlton 8c 470

Marriages Mar 1880
BLANKSBY Henry Basford 7b 131
Doncaster Eliza Basford 7b 131
> Maycock Annie Louise Basford 7b 131
McCormack Alexander Basford 7b 131
McCormack Thomas Basford 7b 131

I think we discount Martha Jane Maycock too soon, and entirely incorrectly!

I think the Jarvis-Maycock marriage is pretty definitely them.

Waiting to hear the bride's father's details!

Hi I have the birth of a daughter Eliza Jane to Alfred Jarvis and Martha Jane Jarvis nee Maycock, on this cert Alfred is a frame work knitter, whereas he is a gromm/ramcar inspecter on other cert.
on wedding cert of maycock & alfred jarvis alfred is a framework knitter also.
Alfred's death he was an electrical store keeper.
I have a b cert for Elizabeth Jarvis daughter of Alfred and martha jane nee Berridge in Basford. where alfred was a groom.
It would be good to find records from the county asylum about Martha jane jarvis as they may have her maiden name or even where she was born.

Christine

Christine Report 11 Dec 2010 21:30

martha jane maycock father was a traveller, Joseph. martha & alfred married in st peters area of nottingham

Christine

Christine Report 11 Dec 2010 21:45

Janey I hope you can see what I have commented upon, we believe that the Maycock side may be cousins but they are not who we'd have hoped they were.

Flick

Flick Report 11 Dec 2010 22:03

None of has been able to find Martha in 1891.............or Alfred in 1881.

The fact that Alfed said he was a widower when he married in 1896 does not mean that it was a true statement.

There is no marriage for him to Berridge anywhere.

So.......perhaps they simply didn't marry

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Dec 2010 22:13

"martha jane maycock father was a traveller, Joseph."

Frederick Berridge's occupation on the 1861 census: Traveller in Cigars.

"I have the birth of a daughter Eliza Jane to Alfred Jarvis and Martha Jane Jarvis nee Maycock, on this cert Alfred is a frame work knitter, whereas he is a gromm/ramcar inspecter on other cert."

It really helps if you give *all* the details of things like this. Is this the birth?

Births Mar 1876
Jarvis Eliza Jane Basford 7b 193

I don't see a death for her before 1881, and I don't see her in 1881.

Whereas this is Elizabeth, discussed earlier in the thread:

Births Dec 1886
Jarvis Elizabeth Basford 7b 162

Just putting that aside for a minute, I think I've found Martha Jane Jarvis in 1891 -- Jane Jarvis:

Name: J J
Age: 34
Estimated birth year: abt 1857
Relation: Patient
Gender: Female
Where born: Barford, Nottinghamshire - it says Basford
Condition as to marriage: Married
Occupation: Charwoman
under disability: Lunatic

Civil Parish: St Mary
Town: Nottingham
County/Island: Nottinghamshire
Registration district: Nottingham
ED, institution, or vessel: Nottingham Lunatic Asylum

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Dec 2010 22:22

1851

Joseph Maycock 36 - born: Derbysh Taddington, occupation Railway Guard
Mary Ann Maycock 31 - born: Derbysh Taddington
Thomas Maycock 11
James H Maycock 6
Charles Maycock 3
Mary E Maycock 10/12
Ann Poulton 12

Civil Parish: Cheetham
Registration district: Manchester
County/Island: Lancashire

Mary Ann Maycock is a rather perfect match for Mary Ann Berridge in the 1861/71.

Christine, you didn't say anything about the fact that

Annie L Berridge in the 1861/1871

was obviously born (and married) as Annie Louise Maycock.

Deaths Jun 1851 ?
Maycock Joseph Henry Manchester 20 418

Christine

Christine Report 11 Dec 2010 22:40

no I have not got as far as annie L Berride I am still trying to work out the similarities between maycock and berridge.

Christine

Christine Report 11 Dec 2010 22:46

1) eliza jane born to maycock and alfred jarvis 22 jan 1876 in basford. alfred here was a frame work knitter
2) elizabeth was born to berridge and alfred jarvis 4 sept 1886 in basford, here alfred was a groom
hope that is clearer for you.

Christine

Christine Report 11 Dec 2010 22:49

thank you for the details of mj jarvis as a lunatic on the 1861, that is very helpful. have you any idea if I can get hold of any records from that hospital in Nottingham, please?

Christine

Christine Report 11 Dec 2010 23:01

sorry I meant 1891, but where did you find this? I cannot find that on the "findyourpast"

Christine

If Frederick berridge was a taveller of cigars would he have filled in a census, perhaps he was on the road with a caravan?

Looks like the same.

Your Alfred was a groom when he married in 1896?

Marriages Dec 1896
CORNHILL Harriett Nottingham 7b 551
(married Henry Cornhill 1885)
Jarvis Alfred Nottingham 7b 551

(Hmm. No Henry Cornhill death 1885-1896, unless he was really old and he died in Devon.)

What was Alfred's father's name/occupation on the 1896 marriage?

What was the name/occupation of the father of the Alfred Jarvis who married Maycock 1875?

All the information that you have and we don't ... it would be so nice if you would give it.

1901

Alfred Jarvis 45 - born Nottingham, Tramcar Inspector
Harriett Jarvis 39 - born Mansfield
Elizabeth Jarvis 14
Percy J F Jarvis 3
William H Jarvis 2
Gladys S Jarvis 3 Weeks

Civil Parish: Nottingham

Well, interesting -- 1891:

Name: Harriett Cornhill
Age: 29
Estimated birth year: abt 1862
Relation: Servant
Where born: ??, Mansfield

Name: H Cornhill
Age: 57
Estimated birth year: abt 1834
Relation: Servant
Where born: Morley, Devon, England

Civil Parish: Berry Pomeroy
Registration district: Totnes
County/Island: Devon

He was really old and he died in Devon. ;)

Sorry, you were posting as I was pondering.

As for the 1891 census and hospital records, I have no clue. ;) I'm in Canada. You could approach the local council authorities for info, maybe.

When I pointed out about Frederick Berridge in 1861 being a traveller in cigars, I was talking about the similarity to Martha Jane Maycock's father, since she reported him as being a traveller on the 1875 marriage certificate.

I think it really is pretty clear that mother Mary Ann was married to Joseph Maycock, and after his death or their estrangement, in Manchester after 1851, she had daughter Annie Louise Maycock (who could have been his child, if born late Q1 1852 and he died late Q2 1851, say).

The next child -- Eliza Berridge aged 6 in 1861 -- could be either of these:

Births Sep 1854
Berridge Eliza Blake Radford 7b 167
Births Mar 1854
Maycock Elizabeth Chorlton 8c 470

In 1861, Martha Jane Berridge is shown as Martha J. Giving a middle initial on the census often indicated that the person went by her middle name. So finding her as Jane Maycock in 1871, and JJ in 1891, makes sense.

And lookie here, the youngest child in 1861:

Births Sep 1859
BERRIDGE Richard Maycock Basford 7b 116
