I cant find any other ships records for Finlay at all.

I would guess that there are NOT 2 Finlays in the US as only one matching your man shows up and he is also in Scotland in 1901 according to the census

So maybe the census immigration year is incorrect?

From page 2 - " The 1910 census says Year of immigration: 1880 but the passenger list says Finlay arrived in 1906 also his daughter Catherine left New York to go to Glasgow in 1899. I'm confused with these dates."

Does this mean it's 2 different Finlays? (Sorry to be so thick)

Smith could have been anything like a Blacksmith or Silversmith etc....Journeyman means he was a tradesman

Flick, thank you again.
When I looked on Familysearch, I just put the surname and parents names to see what came up, I hadn't actually put Finlays name in. I have looked on there now and see the marriage to Ann and there's the other one to Janet Davidson as well.

Sandra Report 16 Jan 2011 09:52

Kay, thank you for that. I wish people would keep the names they were given as it would make life so much simpler. lol

The marriage and the 1871 census certainly tie in with each other

1881 and subsequent censuses obviously reflect a second marriage.....

You may to get some units on Scotland's people to get further info
