Definately is Gay, I think his sister Emily Gay (not the Emily on the 1901 Census as she is Emily Ricketts) was either married to Charles French or co-habitating with her as his first child's mother maiden name was Gay, hope this make sense.

I can't see him either. Are you sure the surname should be Gay? Thinking a mis-transcription maybe.
