Hi Julie.
Thanks for that. Tried the US census but no luck on deciding if it was any of them.
1844 only 3 girls born as Bobbett etc
1845 George. father John . wife Martha jones
Harry. Father George but checked it out and he has a different family
an unreadable name both of these are Wells not Bristol
1846 3 girls born and John Winter and he is wrong as i have followed his family for a few years and e mailed the school they are Quakers.

and as I have said George is not on the 1851 or as we agree the 1861
nothing till after he marries. in 1864.

I will have to give up soon as it seems just a waste of time and money.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Brenda. So we disregard the original post. Also it's quite possible that he didn't know his father so *he* might not be George. Good idea to keep all avenues open still.

Ancestry currently have free access to some US census' - don't know how long for so get in there quick!

There is a George L Babbitt born 1845 in Bristol Somerset Massachusetts in the 1860 census - got a bit excited at first but he's still there in 1880 so not yours unfortunately.

I think he is probably hiding in the UK somewhere, badly mistranscribed or under another name. Frustrating though that neither he or Amelia can be found in 1861. They must be there somewhere!

Unfortunatley this is not my George.

I have this made George a tree all of his own as I have with his ancesters,

I will do a list of all this tree, maybe later today ?
which many other members say we must be connected to ,

and from my George down lots of us are searching for him.

Hi Julie.

That was at the start of this search, on information I was given, but on furthur searching by myself and helpers, I later suggested that my original post was ignored as the 1820 George went to the USA with his wife Caroline and family and there is no George in his family and they stayed there after my George 1845 married Amelia in 1864.

I still wonder if the emigrated as well and George and Amelia came back to marry and live in England.

Brenda, a specific question for you................

You know your great grandfather is George Bobbett because you have his marriage certificate.

You believe his father was also George because he is named on the marriage certificate.

But how do you know that George senior is the son of Joseph Bobbett and Honor Shepherd? Where did that information come from?

Thanks
Julie

Just a little anecdote:

Bottle and Glass, Redcliff Street, Redclifffe
Described as 'spirit shop and tavern' this was advertised to be let in March 1842 with house furnitur and fixings.
Some landlord(s) as listed in directories, etc:
George Vernon 1836
Williiam Irwin 1839 + 40
Thomas Sowder 1845

Edward Powell Worgan was charged at Bristol Police Couert for permitting drunken men to be on the premises in the early hours of the morning on Sunday 18th July 1840. His wife said that they had pushed their way in when the doors were opened and although the police stated that this was usually a well run establishment there was a fine of 20/- and costs

Elizabeth would have been pregnant with Amelia at the time...........

You get the details for the certificates on Ancestry .co.uk,but don't buy them off there as they are more expensive.
By them from the GRO website at £9 25p each.

Hi all
Brenda I do think Mary has the right Worgan family.

Here is the 1841 you refer to:

Registration district: Bristol
Sub-registration district: St Mary Redcliff

Edward Worgan 20
Elizabeth Worgan 20
Elizabeth Worgan 2
Ann Harris 19
Jane Harris 14
Maria Heywood 45

In the 1841 census ages were rounded up or down so 20 may not be the correct age for Edward and Elizabeth.

I think Elizabeth aged 2 then appears in the 1851 census as Sophia - possibly her middle name. This was the census posted earlier by Marie Celeste:

1851 England Census

Civil parish: Bedminster
County/Island: Somerset
Registration district: Bedminster
Sub-registration district: Bedminster

Elizabeth Worgan 33
Sophia Worgan 10
Matilda Worgan 8
Edward Worgan 7
Robert Worgan 5
Emily J Worgan 2 MO

See Matilda aged 8? -she is more than likely Amelia Matilda.

Here's a very good possibility for her in 1841:

1841 England Census
about Malilda Worgan Name: Malilda Worgan
Age: 6 MO
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1840
Gender: Female

Civil parish: Wollastone
Hundred: Westbury
County/Island: Gloucestershire
Registration district: Chepstow
Sub-registration district: Lydney
Malilda Worgan 6 MO

She's not really on her own! On the image she appears with this family:

James Harris 40
Mary Harris 40
Mary Harris 4
Sarah Harris 8
Caroline Harris 6

The 1841 census was taken in June so 6 months of age sounds about right for Amelia Matilda. I can't find a birth for a Matilda Worgan that would match.

Of course the 1841 census does not give relationships but luckily you also have some Harris' appearing with the Worgans in their 1841 household.

Just a thought,if Edward P Worgan Jnr married Emily lambert in 1866 and she was witness to George and Amelis in 1864 could the other witness be him instead of William her dad??

Edward Powell Worgan A/M/J 1842 Bedminster V11 P58

Marriage Edward P Worgan J/F/M 1866 Bedminster 5c 1289 to Emily lambert.

Emily lambert's parents according to tree on Ancestry.co.uk were James Lambert a pig dealer born @ 1817 and maria 1823.
same tree says emily born 1847 died 1887 and edward Worgan died 1891.

All census info,I got off ancestry.co.uk.

Hello Mary.

Thank you for this and the e mail.

first of all the marraige certificate ther are no numbers just Queen street Castle Precinct Bristol

1840 Edward is a Publican
1841 same but said as licenced victular
1864 he is a shoemaker.

1841 for Betty Worgan totally different to the one i already have , and job looks like "lattice"
checked the 1851 census and have seen the one you mean, but I know little about that side . so it may be also a family of coal miners there

these are born 1816
mine say they were 20 in 1841 and and come from St Mary Redcliffe

I wonder if Edward sold the property for money to go abroad with as the redcliffe area family are not listed after 1841 as for as i have been able to find. I have read the item you mention.

I am down the Bobbett line and have spent so much time going round in circles looking for George as without him i cannot get any furthur back,

I have lots of contacts down the
Richard 1719
Richard 1756
Joseph 1795-1800ish
then George 1820 but he married Caroline Savier and they eventually went to the USA.

as did some of the other families

so whether my George's family also went is my mystery, but i am getting to the stage after a few years of searching , i will have to give up, much as i loathe to admit defeat. I will keep going and decide when my subscription runs out.

thank you for your help. feeling just a little de-motivated at the moment.

If you google Edward Powell Worgan there is quite a bit of info on him.

He was the son of John Banister Worgan who was born 1794 and married 16/5/1817 to Sophia Powell.
Edward and Elizabeth nee Stevens had Elizabeth Sophia Worgan 4/8/1839 she married Mr George ?Wookey and she died 1901.

He left large ammount property to Edward who then sold it to James Stevens in 1839.

James was born Hewelsfield, could he be the father of Elizabeth wife of Edward P Worgan.

I know this doesn't help with George Bobbett,I just thought it was a bit of extra info on Amelia's family.

Hello again.

I am still searching for George Bobbett and his Wife Amelia Matilda Worgan.

They married in Bristol in 1864
His Father George Bobbett (deceased)
Her father was Edward Powell Worgan and signed the certificate.
and I have all the census forms on them and there children from then on.

I have Amelia's birth certificate, 6/11/1840 Bristol looks like Edward Paul Worgan ( but the marraige cert. was very clear.) Mother Elizabeth Bobbett formerly Stevens. he is a Publican.

I have a 1841 for a Edward and Elizabeth Worgan both born 1821 But there is not an Amelia on it only another Elizabeth age 2
but there is no mention of them on any later census. He is a licenced Victular.

nor can I find a birth certificate for George most of the census after his marraige say he was born 1845 , all of the George's around that time are accounted for and not mine.

I am wondering if they all emigrated and went before registering George, some of George's siblings are missing for some years as well.

I wonder if someone would be kind enough to have a look for them on the world wide site, if they are there I am willing to pay the extra money but I cannot afford to do it on a whim.

As there seem to be a few other Brenda's is there any way i can add something else to my name.??

Hopefully
Brenda

Hi MarieCeleste

Sorry seem not to have explained properly.

It was George Bobbett that Married Amelia Matilda Worgan in 1864.
and it is Amelia's family I was looking for,

Her father is Edward Powell Worgan. and mother Elizabeth (steven)
I cannot trace them other than the above info, in 1841 both aged 20 so born about 1821 with daughter Elizabeth age 2

there is an elizabeth Worgan on the 1911 but i do not have access any further than to be told that. but not on any mention between 1841 and 1911.
