I skimmed it too quickly the first time .....

To a very large extent, Appleby Bros was the organisation which fathered the modern crane industry. Henry Coles became their Assistant Manager in 1875, succeeding Alexander Grafton, who was appointed Appleby's permanent engineer in Egypt, and who later started his own crane making business in London. Other Appleby protégés did the same thing, although only Henry Coles' company remains to this day.

what we need is for Nicola to read these things I think .............

speaking for what I found, I thought it would be good to see whether there were any other Applebys living in England who were born in Egypt so I did a search (free) of the 1911 census just for Appleby born in Egypt

........ and then when I found Gordon Stewart Appleby I searched for any Appleby living with him and found his wife

........ and then I searched for his marriage

and it was coincidence that he had a son with the same name as Jonathan born about the same time, so I had already seen the Gordon Appleby born in Kent and it seems more likely he was son of Gordon Stewart Appleby than of Jonathan.

I forgot to look for Gordon Stewart Appleby in 1901, lol, so LadyKira did that. And she googled probably things like Appleby Alexandria and found the information about their business.

I hope you get the marriage certificate for Gordon Stewart Appleby because it really is a possibility that he is Jonathan's brother I think, especially since Jonathan had a son named Gordon. The certificate won't prove that but it will give you more information to investigate such as the older Gordon's father's name and occupation.

and another tip is not to have two threads about the same thing, just put another message in the thread you have to ask for more help.

Hi,
Just to confirm a couple of matters....
Gordon Harborn Appleby born 12/08/1911 was definatly born in Harpenden, Herts.
But according to my father no one has ever found any info on Gordons birth, nor infact Peter Malcolm Appleby or Pauline Applebys birth, this I have to look into further.
The 2nd matter was were Jonathan married Florence..well again my father is 99% certain it was here in England.

LadyKira...I am working on getting the marriage certificate of Gordon Stewart Appleby.

chrissiex Report 3 Feb 2011 18:11

Did Jonathan and Florence stay together?

I'm curious because of this marriage

Marriages Jun 1923
Appleby Jonathan K O'Donnell Medway 2a 1601
O'Donnell Hilda A Appleby Medway 2a 1601

there is no birth of a Jonathan K Appleby in the GRO index

but the marriage is in Medway so maybe he was a son of Gordon Stewart Appleby, if so another indication that Gordon Stewart Appleby was a brother of Jonathan Kid Appleby, they named their sons for each other ........ this Jonathan K could be been born in Egypt ........

......... no, that doesn't work, no Jonathan with Gordon Stewart Appleby in 1911 ......... maybe son of another sibling .........

the National Archives, a good place to search

quick search for Appleby Alexandria
