Harold Report 9 Feb 2011 10:30

My great grandmother was Mary Ann Huggett. She was from the Croydon area but married John Hellawell Shaw from Huddersfield. She was born in 1842 to Sarah Wood and William Huggett, Sarah's previous husband was George Hodder. William and Sarah had the Jolly Bleachers pub in Croydon but I can't find Mary Ann in any of the censuses. Also William Huggett is a mystery - some researches have him son of William c1773 but they also say he married Susannah which is unlikely as he would appear in two 1851 census.

Could anyone help me unravel this.

Best Regards Harold Hellawell Bower

Thanks Ann of Green Gables. I don't think that is my Mary - I have a photo of her and I know she was born about 1842. The William could be the one born in 1812 and I did suspect his father was John and not William

John Hellawell Shaw is correct - notice I was also given Hellawell as a middle name both after Elizabeth Hellawell born 1792.

But where is Mary Ann. Family folklore has it that she was a Lady in Waiting in the Croydon area - but took her duties a bit too seriously (with the Lord) and had a a baby
John Hellawell rescued her, whisked her back to Yorkshire, and made an honest woman of her.

Gee Report 9 Feb 2011 11:27

There is no marriage listed for Mary Ann Huggett and John Hellawell Shaw so I would say either Ive missed it or they didnt marry?

As Mary is not on any censuses then this could be her death?

Yes Ginny, that's our lot and Mary Louisa is my grandmother. I am suprised thay did not marry but I have to accept it. She had another son Alfred ( illigitimate presumable via the Lord - see above).

Still does not explain where she is in 1851 & 1861 census before liaison with John Hellawell

Gee

Gee Report 10 Feb 2011 11:18

Im really not convinced about Mary Ann Huggett? She is not with the family and nowhere to be seen on the censuses

Do you have the birth certificate of Mary Louis Shaw? If not then you need to get that to identify Mary Anns maiden name

Hi Ginny, yes that is a puzzle but other evidence is overwhelming. Stories passed down about the ladies maid from the Croydon area for example. Plus the Wood connection. I have a bible given to Dad by a William Wood and he must be Sarah Wood's brother or nephew. And the name Huggett clicked in my sister's memory

The thing is with stories and memories is they get a bit distorted

If you want to go any further with Mary Ann you have to get the birth certifcate of her daughter

Hi Ginny, he died in the war - my grandmother reverred him as an older brother (b1869) - thinking about it, that makes Mary Ann quite old when she had him and even older with my grandma. I was only 9 when she died so never really got to talk to her properly
