the marriage is the 14th Dec 1875 at Lewes,Sussex,
she is aged 20,and Golden aged 23,
her father is named as Edward[deceased] Byle,

Have you found Golden after the marriage? (What a name!)

I can only find a Golden Hope with a wife called Ellen - not Barbara.

Sorry - yes he may be the father. His birth year in the 1891 census is given as 1821.

No death on freebmd for Edward Byle..but deceased fathers were often invented to cover illegitimacy

Terry

Terry Report 7 Mar 2011 22:17

ok thanks for that Flick I will keep that in mind

Does the surname on the certificate definitely look like Byle? Is it possible that the original was copied wrongly onto the index?

This is just an idea - and could be absolute rubbish - but on the 1871 census there is a Barbara Bayley in Rye, Sussex who is a servant with a family. A couple of doors away is a family of Bayley's where the head is called Edward Bayley (could be Barbara's father).

Do you think it is possible that with the local accent (don't know what the accent is like down there) that Bayley could have been mis-heard as Byle?

I could be completely off the mark.
